Beth Goulart: “Art makes us dream that a different world is possible”

The actress and author spoke exclusively about her new book and possible return to TV

“What is art for?” The answer to this question is complex and has given rise to decades-long discussions in various humanities courses, since there is no definitive answer. TO Beth Goulartactress, playwright, singer, member of the Brazilian Academy of Culture and winner of numerous awards for her performances – including none other than that of the legendary writer Clarice Lispector -, art is a form of expression and love.

And Beth loves it in many ways, given that, in addition to her career as an actress, she is also a writer. On November 27th he published his second book, What transforms us? – Short reflections for profound changeswith an autograph session in Sao Paulo that brought together several artists. In an interview, Beth explained her motivation for writing, took stock of her career and said what she thinks about returning to acting on TV.

Beth, what can we expect from the new book?

“I hope we have an interesting exchange of ideas and understandings. Each book takes us to that place of inner listening, a special place to sense our feelings and how they can be our guides in life and our choices. I think knowing how listens It wakes us up to act in the face of changes in the world, it encourages us to improve. We transform our reality every day through events and we can change what surrounds us with different attitudes and a new perspective of self-transformation begins with each person. I am very happy to be able to do it, more once, for propose this silent dialogue to my readers. It is a connection of souls that is established through words and some reflections on life. Time makes us accumulate stories and experiences, and I think that writing will be a way to share what I have learned. “

You are already a famous actress. When did writing come into your life?

“It came very early. I write to deepen what I have felt since adolescence, in a very introspective process, a need to listen to my soul, in the poetic dance of perception of the world. As an actress, I learned early to value every word as a universe of possibilities, meeting authors who expressed themselves and touched the heart with the beauty, horror, intensity, intelligence or subtlety of life. Because I am passionate about literature, writing ended up being an extension of my expression From this more intimate writing I began to create dramaturgy and the contact with great authors, such as Nelson Rodrigues and Clarice Lispector, was a great stimulus to practice my speech, to accept the challenge of writing and propose themes for reflection that I have learned from many masters and being able to share these lessons is rewarding and rewarding, I want to continue doing so.

Now with the book out in the world, what are your next plans?

“I really miss the stage and TV. Acting is my life, I will return to the stage whenever the opportunity arises and there is no shortage of projects, but it is still too early to advertise it. I have a film coming out, but I’m already evaluating other possibilities.”

Taking stock of your entire career, what’s the first feeling that comes to mind?

“Love. I am passionate about the art of acting, of the theater which awakens the human being, making him a creator capable of dreaming of a new world. I believe in the irreplaceable meeting of a human being in front of others, to tell their stories. I believe that art saves man from barbarism, helps us laugh at ourselves. When we bring characters from other times to learn from what has been experienced, it is to avoid repeating ourselves or to enhance what has been done and replicate behaviors.

I believe in an art that leads human beings to seek new ways out, with the hope that we can change the end of our story. I believe in the magical moment of cinema that transports us to any universe and makes us travel without leaving our place. I love TV that communicates with everyone in their homes and has the power to interact in their daily lives. I am an artist, in the deepest sense of the word, I am a vocation and I have accepted as a priesthood the call of art to be who I am. Make real art only when you love it very much!”
