Studies show that a man’s age can cause problems during pregnancy; understand

Research has shown that the length of time a man has been a father can also lead to pregnancy consequences, up to and including miscarriage; understand

There is a lot of talk about the ideal age to be a mother, but did you know that there is also a right time to become a father? Researchers have found that male fertility and sperm quality can harm pregnancy depending on the man’s age. Read below to understand more:

The research

First of all, the authors of the study started from the assumption that the age of parents is increasing. Older men became fathers after age 50 and this could affect the quality of pregnancy. The JAMA Network Open publication shows that, between 2011 and 2022, United States recorded 46.1 million births, with an overall average paternal age of 31. Of these, 484 thousand (1.1%) men were over 50 years old; 47 thousand (0.1%) were 60 years old; and 3,777 (0.008%) were over 70 years old.

The scholars also came to the conclusion that every ten years of increase in the age of the parents resulted in more complicated pregnancies. The numbers showed that 16% of cases had premature births and 14% of babies were born at a lower than normal weight. Furthermore, the attempt was also compromised, as the older men’s partners took longer to get pregnant.

What are the risks?

It turns out that as men age, testosterone production and sperm quality decline. Therefore, when they manage to reach the egg, there may be increased risks of genetic mutations. Other research also shows the consequences. One of these, published in the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, reported that the risks of a child being born or developing dwarfism, kidney cancer, retinoblastoma, neurofibromatosis, cardiac alterations, cleft lip and palate and autism are greater.
