In conversation with the podcast Awards Chatterfrom The Hollywood Reporter, Downey Jr. said that Tobey Maguire inspired him to accept the invitation to bring life to Tony Stark on the big screen. He adds:
I saw how difficult they were, how rewarding they could be, and how popular (superhero movies) were becoming. I had been sober long enough, had an even bigger appetite, and could feel the obsession returning and manifesting the best version of myself. Strangely enough, I was training hard six times a week before I knew that (the role of Iron Man) was coming and they told me, ‘just act like something big is coming and get ready’.”
