Nasal washing: when is it recommended and how to do it?

To deal with the discomfort of a stuffy nose, especially before bedtime, experts recommend nasal washing. Find out more about the technique

Dry climate, temperature changes… All this can cause problems with the respiratory system and the famous “itis”: rhinitis, sinusitis, etc. However, to deal with the discomfort of a stuffy nose, especially before bedtime, experts recommend nasal washing.

What is nasal washing?

It is a procedure that consists of introducing a saline solution into the nasal passages to unclog the sinuses and eliminate impurities. It is a technique recommended by doctors to relieve discomfort caused by secretions and improve breathing.

For the ENT specialist Marcel Menónhigh volume nasal lavage, in which the solution enters through one nostril and exits through the other, represents the main therapeutic alternative for the treatment of rhinitis and rhinosinusitis. It can be done using a syringe or a specific device. It is therefore recommended for all patients. “This procedure aims to thin and hydrate the nasal mucus, allowing a more effective elimination of impurities and secretions, characteristic of sinusitis”explains.

He explains that this method not only facilitates the removal of impurities and secretions accumulated in the nose, but also helps eliminate crusts that may form. “Particularly in the case of rhinosinusitis, nasal washing is an excellent alternative to help treat and control patients’ symptoms.”

However the doctor supports him “Controlling predisposing factors is essential, especially in the case of allergic rhinitis. This includes avoiding exposure to allergens and factors that trigger the condition.”

It is important to be careful when washing children’s noses, for example do not force them if they are very irritated. Care must be taken when handling the syringe to avoid damaging the mucous membranes.

Finally, it is important to also take care of the nasal rinsing device, cleaning the nozzle after each use and sanitizing the internal tank at least once a day.
