The vet gives important advice, as most pets are afraid of fireworks

The end-of-year holidays are approaching and it’s no secret that fireworks are Brazilians’ favorite. Even if some municipalities have already replaced them with drones or silent fireworks, out of respect for pets and sensitive people there is always someone to annoy.

Pets feel more!

Have you ever wondered why dogs and cats are terrified of fireworks? According to veterinarian Fernanda Binati, they hear any sound at a much higher and better frequency than we humans, “this also makes the intensity greater, causing quite a bit of discomfort”.

What precautions should you take?

Therefore, at this time of year, we must be aware of the conditions of the environment in which pets live, of objects that could hurt them or even of possible escape routes, since the fear is so great that it makes them want to go in a place where you feel safe.

However, all this suffering can be minimized, or even non-existent, if owners follow the advice provided by the veterinarian:

  • Don’t leave pets in an environment they don’t recognize;
  • Make sure he cannot escape into the street;
  • Close doors and windows (to reduce external noise), but leave the room well ventilated;
  • Put on some quiet music to calm you down;
  • If the pet is alone, leave an item of clothing with the owner’s scent to make it feel safe.
  • Medicines

Something that has become common in these cases are natural and controlled medications, which can help with this anxiety. However, Fernanda warns of the importance of consulting a veterinarian for the correct prescription.

Techniques for calming pets

There are some techniques to do with the dog, the main one is tying it with a towel, known as the Tellington Touch Technique, in which the vet explains that the animal feels “supported by its mother” as happens when it is a puppy. “However, in some animals it is not completely effective,” he warns.

Discover the Tellington Touch Technique step by step:

Tie the fabric to the dog so that the band goes around the chest and back (forming a figure eight) and finish by tying a knot in the back area, but making sure that it is not exactly above the spine. Remember, of course, not to tighten the band too much. It cannot be too tight on the dog’s body, causing discomfort or discomfort. This is important to do before starting the fireworks.

For cats, Fernanda explains that placing dens, such as simple cardboard boxes or those purchased at pet stores, can help make them feel more secure.
