Did you know? Stress can impact oral health; understand

Oral health problems, such as bruxism, TMJ, wear and tear, or broken teeth, can occur due to stress

Node end of the yearoften, tiredness and stress accumulated over the months can worsen or generate various problems in the body, including oral health. According to dentist Fernando Viek, director of Viek Odontologia, it is during this period that more and more people seek treatment for problems such as bruxism, TMJ, wear or broken teeth.

“During this period, the demand for treatments related mainly to bruxism, which consists of clenching the teeth, has more than doubled. This has a lot to do with stress. And, due to bruxism, other problems appear. This is the case frequent headaches, muscle pain, joint pain and even fractures or tooth loss”, explains the dentist.

Extra bills, goals to achieve, family reunions, closures… there are many ways in which the end of the year can consume you and end up causing stress and, consequently, oral problems.

“Many patients in the clinic complain that their teeth or restorations break frequently, which is not normal. They experience this because of the overload caused by clenching the teeth. At this moment of clenching, the force is excessive,” emphasizes the dentist.

Multisectoral treatment

Bruxism, in most cases, can improve with the use of an oral splint. However, there are other stress-related oral health disorders that may require other measures. And since problems arise from stress, it is necessary to also pay attention to its causes, which can be found in different areas of life.

“Among the factors that help control the problem are regular physical activity, a lighter diet before going to bed and, of course, seeing the dentist to treat affected, lost or worn teeth, as well as combating bruxism and other causes that could arise”, specifies Fernando Viek.

Therefore, always aim for a multi-sectoral treatment, so that the symptoms not only improve, but do not return.
