Sheylli Caleffi launches Breathe Deep, a children’s book that addresses the dangers of social media and sexual violence against children and adolescents, inspired by true stories
Speaker, public speaking coach and researcher on the topic of social networks and their risks, Sheylli Caleffi launches her first children’s book, “Take a deep breath”. Published by Companhia dos Fermentados, the work aims to alert parents, educators and adolescents to the dangers that involve digital environments and influence our lives in person, with an intense narrative and characters of great impact, without the intention of being a content educational.
It is a crime thriller with the combination of six short stories inspired by true stories. “Even though the characters are fictional, the cases really happened to people who follow me, or were reported in local newspapers and outside Brazil. And they demonstrate how we, without wanting to, on a daily basis, do not pay the attention we should to some things. A simple photo of one’s children or a post from a teenager who seems harmless can fuel a network of criminals,” explains Sheylli.
Recent data from the National Cybercrime Reporting Center reveals a 77.13% increase in the registration of new cases of online child sexual abuse and exploitation in 2023, compared to 2022. On the other hand, documents from Meta, responsible for Facebook and Instagram, They estimate that 100,000 children and adolescents receive sexual content, including photos of genitals, every day. The contents of the dossiers were revealed by the British newspaper The Guardian.
“It is very easy to find photos and videos that sexualise children, it is as if we were leaving them alone in a busy avenue, without protection. Social networks are more threatening because there are no concrete laws and no one to refer to,” says the researcher.
An activist for over ten years in the fight against sexual violence, Sheylli speaks openly about the issue on social media, after experiencing it firsthand.
“I suffered abuse as a child and another as an adult while traveling, so I decided to speak out. I created a group on Facebook to welcome the victims and I received a profile with images of the children to report. It seemed harmless at first, as some of them were dancing, but they were interspersed with pornographic content. Over the course of my experience I understood that it doesn’t even need to be something explicit, since these criminals can see evil in everything,” explains the specialist in relation to the beginning of the journey on this topic.
From that moment on he began to delve deeper into the topic, raising awareness of the precautions that can be taken in online environments and how these criminals operate. With the intention of the book also being an educational tool, the goal is for the audience to understand the impact of their actions in a world where our feelings do not differentiate between face-to-face and digital.
“We are still very naive about our attitudes towards social media and gaming, and people don’t realize they are putting their children at risk by exposing their images; Not even children and teenagers have this idea. We are not talking about ‘online photo albums’, we have a ‘commerce’ network that is present there. My hope is that people will explore these stories so we can work together to teach them how to identify dangers and how to protect themselves from them,” he adds.
Furthermore, the work offers a broad approach to several themes relevant to the daily lives of children and adolescents, such as the discovery of sexuality, social isolation and anxiety.
