Billion-dollar investments boost tourism in Brazil

The tourism industry in the country seeks to consolidate itself as an engine of economic growth

Summary

Despite the challenges faced, Brazilian tourism is still below its global potential, but the prospects are promising for the coming years, especially in the southern region of the country.

Brazilian tourism has experienced significant growth in recent years, achieving positive results and overcoming enormous challenges, such as the pandemic and floods in Rio Grande do Sul. However, if you compare the numbers to the global average, the Brazilian tourism industry still falls short of its potential what it can offer to the economy.

According to data from the World Travel and Tourism Council, the global industry is expected to end 2024 with revenues of $11 trillion, which represents 10% of global GDP. In Brazil, however, revenue from travel and tourism is expected to reach 169.3 billion dollars, corresponding to 7.8% of the national GDP.

However, the prospects for Brazilian tourism are promising, especially for the end of this year and, even more so, for 2025. The expansion of investments in hotels, tourist attractions and the recovery of the economy in the Southern Region of the country , added to the increase in the airline network, indicate a significant evolution of the sector.

The study Parks, tourist attractions and entertainment in Brazil, carried out by Noctua Advisory, in collaboration with Sindepat and Adibra, mapped 755 companies in 147 cities in 24 states. The survey highlights 97 large projects under development, with investments of around R$9.5 billion, mainly in tourism (water and theme parks), of which 38% is concentrated on hospitality.

“Brazil must improve its investments in sectors such as infrastructure and modernize its transport systems, with the aim of facilitating access for tourist flows to all regions of the country. And, for the expansion of the national tourism market to be effective, it is essential to have professional management, which focuses on the development of high-quality services and the modernization of the tourism experience,” explains Marcos Jorge, CEO of the RTSC Group.

Shortly after the Rio Grande do Sul floods, Marcos Jorge had an audience with the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, to discuss the recovery of the local economy and the unlocking of airport options. The executive also defends the importance of implementing a new tax rate for the sector, an agenda also defended by several tourism-related associations.

“The tourism sector is extremely important for the economic development of the country and currently represents 8% of the national GDP, being responsible for 3.4 million jobs. It is essential to have adequate treatment, with the creation of a specific tax regime, so that investments in the sector are encouraged, generating more jobs and economic development, as well as offering more incentives and competitiveness to Brazilian tourism”, he analyzes.

The research reinforces the optimistic outlook and importance of the sector, as Brazilian tourism recorded its best performance since the first half of 2019. According to unpublished data from the Tourism Council of the Federation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP), the sector recorded revenues of R$95.3 billion in the first half of 2024, up 1.9% compared to the same period last year.

These results demonstrate that, with adequate investments and concrete actions, Brazil has the opportunity not only to increase its participation in the global market, but also to transform tourism into an even more robust pillar of the national economy.
