The bulletin, signed by doctors Luiz Francisco Cardoso and doctor Álvaro Sarkis, recalls that, on Thursday morning, Lula underwent an endovascular operation – embolization of the middle meningeal artery – complementary to the surgery performed on Tuesday.
In the afternoon, the president underwent new laboratory tests and, at the beginning of the evening, the intracranial drainage was removed, without complications, the hospital said.
The doctors reiterate that Lula remains “lucid and oriented, speaks normally, eats well and receives visits from family”. He is accompanied by a medical team led by Prof. Dr. Roberto Kalil Filho and Dr. Ana Helena Germoglio.

Lula’s speech
The president was rushed into surgery in the early hours of Tuesday 10th, after experiencing severe headaches and tests revealed a haemorrhage in the brain region.
He underwent emergency surgery to drain a hematoma located in the frontoparietal region, on the left side of the head. The lesion was 3 centimeters and was removed.
Shortly after the operation, the medical team reported that the president had a good evolution, is stable, speaks normally, eats and that he will be under observation for the next few days.
The first procedure Lula underwent was called trepanation.
“It’s a small perforation of the skull, where drainage is introduced. It’s a relatively standard procedure in neurosurgery, it’s not an opening, it’s not a major perforation of the skull. Typically, healing is spontaneous, without the need for a closure surgery”, explained Dr. Mauro Suzuki, who is part of the medical team.
Relationship with the fall of Alvorada and new procedure
According to the medical team, the intracranial hemorrhage is the consequence of a domestic accident suffered by Lula on October 19, when he fell in the bathroom of the Palácio do Alvorada and needed stitches on his head.
The professionals explained that, after the domestic accident, the president was free to carry out his activities normally, but continued to be observed and subjected to tests to monitor the onset of late complications, such as this intracranial hemorrhage.
On the morning of Thursday the 12th, the general director underwent an endovascular operation which completes the surgery carried out at the beginning of the week. According to the medical bulletin, the operation falls “into the therapeutic planning”.
This second operation was already planned and represents a precaution to avoid possible new brain hemorrhages in the future.
The surgery Lula underwent today is called middle meningeal artery embolization. Through a catheter that reaches the head region, a substance is injected that interrupts the blood flow in this artery. According to doctors, the operation was not carried out in a surgical center, but in a catheterization room. The surgery is “low risk” and “relatively simple”.

After the new operation, the medical team declared that Lula is well, with a “super stable” condition, and guaranteed that the complementary operation was a success.
According to doctors, the chances of Lula bleeding again are almost zero. This Thursday, the president has a less than 5% chance that the hematoma will return.
“Now there is a much lower probability of doing it again. The other side [o direito] he had a bruise that had already been reabsorbed and, apparently, all the leaves of the meninge have healed, and the chances of him healing are practically zero,” explained Dr. Rogério Tuma. According to the specialist, as the days passed, the the risk decreases further.
Bullish forecasts
The expectation, if the situation proceeds well, is that Lula will be discharged next Monday or Tuesday and will be able to return to Brasilia.
After being discharged, the president will have to remain under medical supervision for some time, as is usual in any surgery.
“Obviously a program of dispatches will be able to follow at the Palace later, we don’t see any problem in this regard. What is expected is that at the beginning of the week the president will be in Alvorada. Of course, relative perhaps it will be necessary to rest for a few weeks. He will gradually resume its normal activity,” explained Dr. Kalil.
Lula should also take other precautions: Kalil said the president regularly exercises, and this will be postponed for some time.
