Find out how to avoid unexpected events and make the most of your family trip
Imagine the scene: a family eager to embark on their dream vacation is surprised at the airport to discover that they do not have the necessary documentation for their minor child’s trip. Or, during a long flight, children become restless due to the lack of adequate entertainment. These situations are common, but can easily be avoided with the right planning. Tourismologist Suzana Groff, CEO of Gramado Premium, presents practical advice to help families avoid setbacks.
Necessary documentation for children
On domestic flights, children can board with a birth certificate or photo identification, such as a valid ID or passport. If accompanied by relatives up to the third degree, such as grandparents or uncles, it is necessary to demonstrate the relationship through documents. If the child is unaccompanied or accompanied by a stranger, a notarized judicial or extrajudicial travel authorization is required. The specialist recommends making certified copies and always leaving a copy of the documents with a responsible person who is not traveling.
When traveling abroad, all minors must carry a valid passport. For Mercosur countries, an identity document in good condition is accepted. Depending on the destination, a travel authorization from both parents or legal guardians, notarized by a notary, may be required. “It’s important to check the specific requirements of each country and airline,” advises Suzana.
Mandatory vaccinations
Some countries require proof of vaccination, such as against yellow fever. It is essential to consult the requirements of the destination and carry the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) with you when necessary. The CIVP can be issued at health units or through the Meu SUS Digital platform. It is also important to respect the deadlines: «For yellow fever it is necessary to get vaccinated at least 10 days before the trip. Other vaccines, such as those against measles or Covid-19, may be necessary depending on the country or locality’s health conditions,” he informs.
Choose the best seats
The choice of seat can have a direct impact on the comfort of children, especially younger ones. Seats in the front rows or near the dividers offer more legroom and may be quieter, but they may also be colder due to their proximity to the air vents. Those in the corridor facilitate access to the bathroom. “We recommend checking seat configurations on the airline’s website to ensure they meet your family’s needs,” advises Suzana. It is important to remember that, for safety reasons, seats in the emergency exits are not permitted for families with children.
Transport of strollers and car seats for children
Most airlines allow free carriage of a stroller or car seat for a child up to 2 years old. These items can be used up to the door of the aircraft, where they will be collected and returned upon disembarkation.
Health care
To minimize discomfort caused by pressurization, such as earaches, encourage children to chew or drink liquids during takeoff and landing. Keeping your nose moisturized with a saline solution is also helpful. “Small measures can make a difference for the well-being of the little ones during the flight”, underlines Suzana.
Travel insurance for children
Taking out travel insurance that includes coverage for children is essential, especially when traveling abroad, guaranteeing medical assistance in case of emergency. “Good insurance brings peace of mind and security to the family, to deal with unforeseen events and emergencies quickly and efficiently,” says the tourism specialist.
Finally, it is important for families to be aware of the discounts offered by many airlines for those traveling with children. Some examples include priority boarding, children’s meals and entertainment kits for little ones. “These benefits make traveling more comfortable and help minimize the challenges of flying with children.”
Furthermore, having the support of a professional or specialized company can make the difference in planning your trip. “Personalized planning ensures that each stage is designed according to the family’s needs”, concludes Suzana.
