Going on a yellow ticket: what rules did Russian escorts have to follow

In the 19th century, prostitution was officially legalized in the Russian Empire. Women who decided on this activity had to receive a special yellow ticket – and follow its strict rules.

Initially, the provision of intimate services in the Russian Empire was strictly prohibited. And yet, in 1843, Emperor Nicholas I started the process of legalizing “brothels”.

As the saying goes, if you can’t prevent ugliness, you have to direct it. The authorization of an escort helped to control the spread of venereal diseases in the country. And above all, it allowed doctors of the time to study these ailments and develop drugs against them.

Every “public woman” had to surrender her passport to the police and get a yellow ticket – and always carry it with her. It was called yellow only because of its appearance: after all, it was printed on the cheapest paper that had a yellow tint.

By the way, girls from the age of 16 could get a yellow ticket and officially become a moth! The minimum age for starting work in an escort was raised only in 1903 – to 21 years.

Age requirements were also imposed on brothel owners. It can be women from 35 to 60 years old. And brothels could be located within 300 meters of churches, colleges and schools.

On the last page of the yellow ticket was a list of rules that “public women” must follow. Here are a few :

  • An escort could only keep 25% of her earnings. Everything else went to the brothel’s mistress, who was supposed to provide the girls with everything they needed. Also, the hostess could take the dresses, jewelry and other “luxury items” of her employee if she decided to leave her home without having worked there for less than a year.
  • A public woman was obliged to pay extreme attention to her hygiene: “wash certain parts with cold water after each man”. And if possible, change your underwear
  • During menstruation, it was strictly forbidden to engage in an escort – as well as during the treatment of infections. In addition, to prevent infection, the girls had to inspect the intimate organs of their clients.
  • The girls who broke the yellow ticket rules were detained by the police and sent for a time to workers’ houses – special places for the needy and petty criminals, where they lived and ate, doing manual labor

The yellow tickets ceased to exist in 1917, after the revolution. For many years escort classes were poorly regulated by law – but girls were still detained under other articles. And in 1987, escorts in the USSR were officially banned.
