With the excessive heat and intensity of the sun’s rays, health requires special care during the summer. Learn how to take care of yourself
With the arrival of the hottest season of the year, our well-being and health require special care. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET), heavy rains are expected for the beginning of 2023, followed by an increase in temperatures. The scenario can cause several problems to the body. However, due to school holidays and the Christmas and New Year holidays, it is normal for the population to be careless.
According to the coordinator of the Nursing course of the Faculdade Anhanguera, Professor Rafaela Saviolli, the station requires attention to health. “It is important to always be alert to the risks of illness, discomfort and other problems typical of summer,” he says.
The teacher highlights the main tips for maintaining well-being during the season. Check:
Hydration
“The body is made up of 70% water and is a great ally for the vital functions of our organism. In summer we sweat more because the elimination of liquids controls body temperature. It is recommended to drink 2 liters of water per day. Good hydration helps manage calories, improve organ function and prevent retention,” says the expert.
Incidence of the sun
“Practicing physical activity outdoors at times when the sun is strongest can cause dehydration and an increase in body temperature. The best times to exercise are early in the morning, until 10am, and after 4pm”, he warns.
Solar filter
It is important to intensify the use of sun protection, emphasizes the teacher. This is because, according to data from the INCA (National Cancer Institute), skin cancer represents 33% of cancer diagnoses in Brazil. The condition is mainly caused by sunlight.
Eat lightly
Eating heavy, fatty foods may not be the best alternative, as they require more digestion, which increases body temperature. «Prefer lighter meals and foods with a good percentage of water. During the summer, cases of food poisoning are also frequent, as the heat causes the products to deteriorate more quickly. It is therefore important to pay attention to expiry dates”, warns Raffaela.
Appropriate clothing
Clothing contributes to increasing body temperature. It is important, therefore, to make room for lighter clothes, with natural fiber fabrics, such as cotton, linen, silk and crêpe, which allow ventilation of the body, advises the teacher. “Light colors are allies, as dark tones tend to absorb heat and, therefore, harm comfort,” he adds.
