Preparing for the New Year: How to Clean the House Quickly and Effectively

Preparing for the New Year: How to Clean the House Quickly and Effectively

The day before the holidays, everyone usually does a lot of cleaning before the New Year. We decided to make it easier for you: here is a checklist of things to do in each room.

Corridor

As they say, there’s no second chance to make a first impression. The hallway will immediately tell guests everything about your house, so start there:

  • Remove family members’ belongings and shoes. Guests must be able to undress and hang up their clothes in complete peace of mind.
  • Clean all horizontal surfaces. If you don’t have a bench or ottoman and your guests include young children or elderly people, bring a chair.
  • Wipe the dust from the mirror and lamps.
  • Vacuum and wash the floors, not forgetting the baseboards.
  • Light a scented candle or set up a diffuser. And don’t forget to hang the New Year’s wreath on the door!

Kitchen

It is customary for us to welcome guests in the kitchen, even if you then sit in the living room. The kitchen must therefore be impeccable. Start with the countertop: Clean, tidy countertops immediately add freshness. Then do the following:

  • Empty the refrigerator. Check food expiration dates, throw away spoiled items and wipe down surfaces. Make sure you only have what you really need in the fridge.
  • Clean the oven and cooking plates. Pay attention to hard-to-reach places where grease can accumulate and make sure the surface is perfectly clean: this way you won’t have to be distracted and irritated when you start preparing party dishes.
  • Check the supplies in the cupboards. Make a list of necessary products and small items. This will help avoid any hustle and bustle on the holiday day.
  • Wash the trash. Someone will definitely use it!
  • Check the condition of kitchen knives. What’s worse than cutting Olivier with a dull knife!
  • Prepare the textiles. Wash aprons and towels, remove soiled or torn items to keep your kitchen clean and beautiful.

Bathroom

Guests will definitely visit the bathroom, so give it special attention. Start by decluttering: throw away all empty cans, ugly leftovers and remove unnecessary items from the room. And then:

  • Clean the bathtub and shower thoroughly. Eliminate soap scum and mold.
  • Check your gutters. Make sure they are not blocked.
  • Remove dust from the lamp and the ventilation grille.
  • Put things in order on the shelves, drawers and cabinets so that everything is in its place and nothing unnecessary is in plain sight.
  • Stock up on supplies. Make sure you have soap, toilet paper and clean towels on hand to keep your guests comfortable.
  • Don’t forget to wash the mirror and hang clean towels.

Living room

The main thing in the living room is comfort and comfort. Here’s what you need to do to make sure your guests enjoy it:

  • Carpet and floor cleaning. If you don’t have time for professional cleaning, use baking soda, which effectively eliminates odors.
  • Remove dust. Don’t forget the shelves, plinths and lamps.
  • Care of upholstered furniture. Remove pet hair and stubborn stains so guests can sit comfortably.
  • Remove dust from curtains and blinds. This detail is often overlooked, but can affect the overall impression of the room.
  • Organization of space. Make sure all unnecessary items are put away.

Additional Cleaning Tips

  • Make a plan. Write down all tasks and mark those completed so you don’t miss anything. This will help systematize the process.

  • Check the space. Make sure all surfaces are tidy and that you haven’t left any rags or buckets anywhere.
  • Pay attention to odors. Use perfumes and candles to spread a pleasant aroma in your home.
