Discover ways to keep your plants from drying out or dying this holiday season
The end of the year is a time when there is a lot of travel, which can create headaches for plant owners. But what few people know is that there are ways to preserve species and prevent them from drying out or dying. Check it out below:
Tips to prevent plants from drying out or dying during travel
Capillarity
Capillarity is a good trick for plants that need little water, such as cacti and succulents. Place a bowl full of water and stretch a string from the pot to the bowl. In this way the water passes from the bowl to the vase by capillarity.
Choose a wide, low bowl, placing it on top of the pots.
How to water the plant while traveling
For plants that need frequent watering, the ideal is to hire a “plantsitter”, a service that takes care of watering your home for you, or ask a friend to water your plants once a week.
Newspaper sheets
Dampen five sheets of newspaper with water and place them on top of the soil in the pot around the plant. The leaves help keep the earth moist and protect the soil from the sun. If you have rocks or bark, place them on top of the newspaper to keep the leaves wet longer.
Pots with automatic watering
You can use glass or plastic bottles inserted into the substrate with water or drippers, which can water the plant without human help, as well as using pots with automatic watering, which work as a kind of vertical root for watering the plant.
How to take a plant on a trip
To bring plants on a plane you need to check the regulations of the company you are traveling with, but the vast majority allow them to be transported.
When traveling by car, avoid carrying plants in pots that could break. Two weeks before your trip, replant the plants in sturdy containers, such as plastic nurseries. Another option is to wrap the containers in bubble wrap. Remember to water the plants according to the needs of each species.
