Dancer, actor, comedian and revolutionary. This is Jorge Luiz Souza Lima, better known as Jorge Lafond, who if he were alive today, would be 72 years old. Carioca passionate about dance

Jorge was born in Nilópolis, Rio de Janeiro. Before becoming famous, he worked as a hairdresser and, in this job, he found himself wearing the role of a drag queen.

He studied classical dance and African dance and, after graduating in Performing Arts from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), worked as a dancer for more than 10 years, performing in the United States and Europe. Thanks to his talent he was also part of the dance troupe of the Fantasticfrom TV Globo, in 1974.

From that moment on, Lafond also gained space on other programs on the network, such as Long live Gordoin 1981, Plunct Plact Zuuum in 1983 and in Sassaricando, four years later. In 1989 she played the role of Madame Satã in Kananga of Japana plot of TV Manchete, and joined the cast of The Trapalhões as a Divine Soldier. In the play, the macho soldier returned “different” from a trip abroad. The character attracted the attention of Carlos Alberto de Nóbrega, who invited him to participate in the program The square is ours.

Jorge made his debut on Silvio Santos’ station Square in 1992 with Vera Verão, an arrogant and extravagant former young lady, owner of the iconic slogan “Epa, faggot!”, which has become a point of reference for the LGBTQIA+ community. Jorge remained in comedy until 2002.

Highlight of the Carnival

Lafond made history by parading in several samba schools. Months before her death, the artist had paraded as Drum Queen of the samba school United of San Lucain Sao Paulo. But it wasn’t the first time Lafond was present at the Carnival. In 1990 he caused a sensation by parading in codpieces on a Beija-Flor float, which had the theme “Todo Mundo Nasceu Nu”.

Strength in the LGBT community

Because he was black and openly gay in an era when conservatism was even more present in society, Lafond faced prejudice and a number of obstacles to achieve fame. Today Lafond is recognized as an important name in the anti-racist and LGBTphobic struggle. It’s worth remembering!
