Menopause is an important phase marked by the end of menstruation, it can occur between the ages of 45 and 55 and can trigger various problems. One of them is weight gain.
According to research published in February this year, called Weight gain in middle-aged women (Weight Gain in Middle-Aged Women), Middle-aged women experience aging, menopause, and lifestyle changes that promote weight gain.
Renato Lobodoctor graduated from the USP Faculty of Medicine, with a postgraduate diploma in Nutrology from ABRAN – Brazilian Association of Nutrology and a postgraduate diploma in Sports Medicine, reveals that hormones play a fundamental role when it comes to lose weight.
“Menopause is characterized by the decrease in some hormones, such as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), precursor of estrogen and progesterone, and testosterone. They help stimulate the metabolism. And when they are unbalanced it becomes more difficult to burn calories and be motivated to do physical activity,” explains the specialist.
According to the study, these hormonal changes in menopause also affect the distribution of body adiposity and increase central adiposity.
“In other words, women accumulate more visceral fat, which is found around the abdominal organs. And the worst part isn’t even the aesthetics. Fat can increase the chances of developing cardiovascular disease and even cancer,” warns Renato Lobo.
According to the nutrition specialist, it is possible to lose weight during menopause. «The first step is to measure hormones, through blood tests, to find out which ones are unbalanced. A multidisciplinary approach may be necessary to prescribe hormone replacement therapy, create a nutritional and physical plan”, concludes Renato Lobo, who explains weight loss during menopause better in the video.
