To be eliminated from the body, alcohol goes through an entire process: initially it transforms into acetic acid. However, it first becomes acetaldehyde, which is even more toxic than alcohol. Therefore, this set of substances in action causes the symptoms of a hangover. Additionally, alcohol causes the body to eliminate water, which can also cause dehydration.

How do I know if I have a hangover?

According to the nutritionist Patricia Davidson, specialist in natural hormonal health and women’s health, symptoms include fatigue, nausea, headache, sensitivity to light, dehydration, or dizziness that lasts for several hours.

“Alcohol blocks the production of a hormone that helps the body retain water, leading to dehydration and loss of electrolytes such as potassium and sodium. The body is thought to experience specific hormonal and immune responses during a hangover which trigger different symptoms.” explains the nutritionist.
