The partnership between the 3D tech startup and InCor allowed for a realistic visualization of the Siamese case

Eloá and Sara are two Brazilian Siamese sisters joined in the chest. The separation intervention, unprecedented in Brazil, involved about 40 healthcare professionals, who had special help: the 3D modeling technology of the human body developed by MedRoom, a startup that offers solutions for teaching anatomy in courses of health in Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru.
The partnership between edtech and Instituto do Coração began in 2019, when the organization implemented in its construction, through a partnership also with Intel, the Andar Digital InCor, a virtual reality station with the solution for the study of anatomy and clinical cases.
In 2020, the first case studies of the twins were made, through a 3D virtual modeling developed by MedRoom. With the program it was possible to have a clear view of the sisters’ bodies and the relationship between their heart, breast bones, liver and circulatory veins.
“We first looked at the survival perspective of the children. We needed to know if they would breathe, intubate and if they could survive outside the womb. We started with a CT scan, which gave us an idea of the anatomy and whether this separation was possible, “says Dr. Marcelo Jatene, director of InCor’s Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Unit.
“We envisioned the possibility of doing the separation and the VR part was what gave us the final chance. On the one hand, we had an idea to realize and virtual reality helped us define what we thought was best. Not that it would be impossible to do it in the original location, but this information that VR brought us helped define the path we believe is the best. ”
Professionals worked for 30 days in this case
In the case of the Siamese sisters, the edtech team had 2 professionals, who worked for 30 days, so that the system accurately replicated the 3D models generated by the image exams for a visualization of the connection and relationship of the structures between the infants.
“The challenge was great, but we firmly believe that the MedRoom solution would bring an important differential to the success of the surgery. Working on this unprecedented case in Brazil, together with our partner InCor, has allowed us to further evolve our technology ”, emphasizes Sandro Nhaia, CTO and co-founder of edtech.
“It was a very challenging case and at the same time gratifying, for having been able to combine support for the surgical team with the use of cutting-edge technologies such as 3D virtual reality and, above all, to benefit the two girls “, says Guilherme Rabello, Commercial and Head of Market Intelligence at InovaInCor, the innovation center of InCor and the Zerbini Foundation.
After undergoing the separation operation and facing the challenge of a complex recovery, Sara and Eloá are healthy, at home and receiving all the care of their parents and doctors.
