How often should you clean everything in the bathroom, from the mirror to the shower head?

Of course, we don’t spend as much time in the bathroom as, say, in the bedroom. But the way we use it requires a special approach to cleaning.

Housewives often wipe certain surfaces requiring daily attention only once a week. They therefore have to spend a lot more time cleaning them. So take note of the bathroom cleaning schedule established by professional cleaners: here’s what you should do and when.

Table top

Periodicity: once a day

Melissa Maker, owner of a cleaning company, recommends wiping down your counters at the end of each day to remove toothpaste splatters, hairs and other debris. “Keep a microfiber cloth under your sink and take it out in the evening to tidy up your countertops, it only takes a few seconds. If the paste stays on a surface for more than a day, it can be difficult to clean: remove it when it is wet,” advises Melissa.

According to Melissa, the same rule applies with a mirror as with a table top: the sooner you remove dirt from the glass, the better. Plus, it’s a clean mirror that makes the bathroom look neat, so it’s better to wipe it every night.

To flow

If you neglect to clean the sink, it will turn into a breeding ground for bacteria, which, in turn, will cause an unpleasant odor. To prevent this from happening, cleaning company president Alicia Sokolowski advises cleaning your sink at least once a week (or every 14 days if you live alone).

Toilets require regular maintenance – if you neglect thorough cleaning, micro-organisms can settle in there, including potentially dangerous micro-organisms – for example E. coli. “Regular cleaning helps prevent this, reducing the risk of illness and the spread of infections. Clean the toilet once a week or two if more than five people use it,” advises Alicia.

Shower or bath

Periodicity: once a week (but there are nuances!)

A thorough cleaning of your shower or tub should be done once a week, but Maker says you should pay attention to it after each use. “It is extremely important that the walls are dry so that hard water marks or soap deposits do not appear on them. After swimming, take a minute to dry them – use an absorbent microfiber cloth to do this,” advises the expert.

Bathroom floor

Periodicity: once a week

Hair, drops of cosmetics and toothpaste accumulate on the bathroom floor; you should get rid of it at least once a week as part of routine cleaning. But it’s best to wipe the water off immediately, especially if it’s mixed with shower gel or shampoo, otherwise you risk slipping and falling on it.

Curtain and carpet

Periodicity: once a month

“Wash the curtain and carpet at least once a month, otherwise fungus could take hold. The bottom of the curtain should be inspected at least once a week. If there is mold, it should be cleaned immediately, without waiting for scheduled cleaning,” says Sokolowski.

Shower head

Periodicity: as soon as you notice the plaque

Water contains mineral salts that can clog the holes in the shower head and reduce water pressure. If you know that hard water is flowing from the tap in your home, you should clean the watering can once a week, otherwise once a month. Melissa also recommends relying on the “symptoms” that precede a clog: clean your shower as soon as a white residue appears on the shower head. (Here we tell you how to do it.)
