The survey shows that the selection and incorrect use of false eyelashes cause the fall of the natural threads and the changes of the eyes. See how to prevent
The preference for long and voluminous eyelashes has been a trend for some time, which encourages many women to resort to false hair. However, incorrect use puts the health of the eyes at risk, as in the case of the actress Queen Casé, who has lost viewing for two days.
But this does not mean that you should abandon the use of false eyelashes. According to the ophthalmologist Leôncio Queiroz Neto, president of the Burnier Institute of Campinas (SP), although frequent in the offices with changes in the eyes caused by false eyelashes, the problem is in selection and incorrect use.
The survey shows damage caused by false eyelashes
This is what the clinical folders of 180 women participated in 2023 from the hospital with eye problems caused by the incorrect use of the eyelashes. The diagnosed changes were:
Allergy In 25% or 45 women, due to the lack of tests by patients with sensitivity to the form of glue that may contain eye irritation ingredients such as formaldehyde or other chemical ingredients. “Some people can be allergic to these components, which can cause redness, itching, swelling or laceration,” explains the ophthalmologist.
Keratitis (inflammation in the cornea) It occurred in 20% or 36 women where the glue entered the eyes directly. Queiroz Neto states that the cornea is rather innervated and therefore when it comes into contact with toxic substances, it causes intense pain, blurred vision and in more serious cases fall into visual acuity. Therefore, the ophthalmologist recommends to wash their eyes immediately with abundant water to eliminate all glue residues for the eyes and avoid further damage
Toxic conjunctivitis In 30% or 54 women, caused by the incorrect application of false eyelashes and penetration of glue to the eyes which in contact with the conjunctiva causes its inflammation. The symptoms are redness, itching, swollen eyelids and watery secretion in the eyes.
Dry eye In 15% or 27 women, caused by the frequent use of false eyelashes too heavy and debris of glue interfere with the production of tears that obstruct the glands at the base of the eyelashes and on the edge of the eyelids that produce the tear.
Edge In 10% or 18 women, caused by the use of very voluminous eyelashes which because they are very heavy weaken the bulb of natural threads and causes its fall
Prevent any problem
To prevent eye damage, the ophthalmologist recommends choosing hypoallergenic glue. In addition, it is important to read the label before buying and discarding formulas that contain formaldehyde, an ingredient known for causing allergy.
“Before use, it is necessary to perform the patch test which consists in applying a small amount of glue in a discreet area of the skin, such as behind the ear, the wrist or the fold of the arm,” he says. No reaction occurs in 48 hours, the glue can be used to correct false eyelashes.
How to put and take false eyelashes
The ophthalmologist teaches the pace step to prevent the glue from penetrating the eyes during the fixation. Check:
- Remove the eyelashes from the package with a pliers or using the fingers;
- If necessary, adjust the length with scissors;
- Apply the glue to the base of the false eyelashes;
- Wait a few seconds that the glue begins to become sticky;
- Place the false eyelashes as close as possible to the edge of the eyelash line.
If the glue penetrates the eyes, remove the eyelashes immediately and washed in abundance with cold water. Do not disappear the discomfort immediately consult an ophthalmologist.
The doctor also reveals how to remove false eyelashes without damaging the natural threads:
- Apply the refund of the make -up to the base of the eyelashes with a cotton swab;
- Gently keep the tip from the false eyelashes and pull them from the outer edge inside – never lift the eyelashes;
- Clean the residual glue.
Queiroz Neto recommends that, however much you like to wear false eyelashes every day, it is important to take time to strengthen natural eyelashes.
