The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the preponderance of this type of adult disorder in the country is similar to the world average, which is 5%
According to the Brazilian Association of the attention deficit (ABDA), the attention deficit disorder (ADHD) is prevalent in 6% of patients for 45 years. The entity stresses that the ADHD also affects 5.2% of people aged between 18 and 44. According to the psychiatrist Amanda Cavalcante (CRM-RJ 8807 and RQE 4670), the ADHD is a neurological disorder that is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. However, he underlines that patients do not have all the characteristic symptoms of the problem. “Some people have carelessness without hyperactivity, others have a predominance of hyperactivity and impulsiveness, while others have combined symptoms,” he explains.
Adults receive a late diagnosis
The presenter Sabrina Sato and the journalist Phelipe SianiFor example, they were diagnosed in adulthood with ADHD. But why does it happen? For the expert, the first factor concerns the history of the disease, because, in the past, this type of disorder (like many others in psychiatry) was not something that has received due attention and few professionals really dismembered the symptoms to make the diagnosis. “These people have been described as lazy, aerial and out of place. Often it happens that a father brings his son by the psychologist or psychiatrist for evaluation and, when identifying himself with symptoms, he makes him look for an evaluation for himself and faces this diagnosis,” he says.
A factor perceived by Amanda in his daily life is that people with carelessness, reading the disorder, identify – on the one hand, the expert says that it is good, since this psychoeducation makes health workers diagnose. However, the psychiatrist underlines that this symptom must be well -being, since inattention can be secondary to numerous pathologies, both clinical (hypothyroidism, some vitamins decrease) and psychic (depression).
The Brazilian Association of the attention deficit comments that the disorder in adulthood tends to be more complicated for men. The psychiatrist underlines that the prevalence of hyperactivity and impulsiveness is greater in the male public because the symptoms are related to risk behaviors (abusive use of substances). Amanda stresses that these people have more difficulty following rules and limits.
Signs that can identify ADHD in adults
The doctor lists some symptoms of ADHD for adults, as always late (people get lost in time more easily); Have difficulties in relationships with other people (difficulty listening, showing affection and forgetting the commitment, which can be understood by the other that the person does not matter); Reconsiderated direction (doing several things at the same time or unable to wait for the traffic); Having difficulty starting the activities, leading to procrastination and explosive behavior in order not to obtain the car -contollo.
Treatment
Amanda underlines that the treatment is performed with psychotherapy, having a good response to cognitive behavioral therapy, being an excellent option for the person with ADHD to learn to better manage symptoms, having an improvement in the quality of life. In addition, the pharmacological treatment, having as its first psychostimulating line (lisdexanfetamine, methamphetamine) and second line, now available in Brazil, atomoxetine. “These are the most commonly prescribed drugs, but we have others, which will be framed according to the history of each patient,” he concludes.
