Dengue: Understanding the health care of children

The increase in cases of Dengue in Brazil illuminates an important warning to the health of children and adolescents

Brazil has already accumulated a total of over 49,000 suspicious cases of dense between children and teenagers up to 14 years. The data of the Ministry of Health illuminates an important warning for vaccination, the main form of disease prevention.

Since 2024, the National Immunization Program (PNI), of the Unified Health System (Sus), has free doses for children from 10 to 14 years. The low question of vaccine, however, caused the expansion of some municipalities. The measure was a way to prevent the loss of immunizers whose expiry date is close.

For the pediatrician and professor of medicine at the University of Positive (UP), Gislayne Souza Nieto, is essential Parents vaccinate all children who can be vaccinated. Dengue is a serious illness that can be even worse in children, as their body has no resources to defend themselves.

“For parents who can pay, it is important to vaccinate even in particular children under the age of 10 and over 14 years, who are not contemplated by PNI right now”, warns the pediatrician.

Protect children from the Dengue

Although the vaccine is the most effective prevention measure against the Dengue, the use of repellents and points of sale can help prevent the presence of the mosquito and prevent infection. These products help to avoid the Dengue not only, but all Arbovirus such as Zika, Chikungunya and Oropouche Fever, common at this time of the year.

According to Gislayne Souza, from the three months, parents can already use repellents in children, especially in cities and regions with the highest prevalence of Dengue. However, keep in mind which product is most suitable for each age group.

“The children’s version has been safe and can generally be used for three months. Then there is the version for children, usually to be used in children over two years of age. But it is always essential to follow the recommendations for the use of a pediatrician,” says the expert.

In the case of children under the age of three, the ideal is to use a sort of physical protection. This helps to avoid leaving the areas of the body exposed to mosquitoes. “Long trousers and long -sleeved blouses are good allies in this sense. But as we are still in summer, they always opt for light fabrics that do not heat up so much”, recommends Gislayne.

To integrate protection, parents can still use electrical repellent, which aim to prevent insects in closed environments. Or put a mosquito net to prevent access to insects to the child, especially in cribs and strollers.
