International HPV awareness day: experts warn for the prevention and importance of vaccination

On March 4, marked the importance of the awareness of diseases, which may have been transmitted in many ways. Comments of experts!

On March 4, the world mobilized for the international day of HPV awareness. The date was created to warn human papillomavirus infection (HPV). This virus affects millions of people globally and is directly linked to the development of various types of cancer, in particular to the cervix.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the HPV is responsible for over 99% of cases of cervical cancer and is associated with tumors in the genital, anal, oropharyngeal region and genital warts. The main form of prevention is vaccination, recommended for 9 -year -old girls and boys.

Vaccination is essential to fight HPV

The gynecologist and obstetric PatrĂcia Varanda strengthens the importance of immunization and early diagnosis of the infection. “The vaccine against the HPV is safe and highly effective in the prevention of preconceptional lesions. Furthermore, Pap Test is essential for the early diagnosis of cellular changes that can lead to cancer,” explains the expert.

The HPV is a sexual transmission virus and, according to the Ministry of Health, about 80% of the sexually active population will contact it at some point in their life. The doctor feels the importance of using condoms, which reduce the risk of contagion, but do not completely eliminate the possibility of infection. “The HPV is transmissible from leather skin to skin, which means that even without penetration there is a risk of contagion,” says PatrĂcia Varanda.

This year’s campaign has strengthened the need for education regarding the virus, expanding the knowledge on the vaccine, preventive exams and forms of transmission. “We must demystify the topic and make the population aware that the HPV is a public health problem, but has prevented effective information and measures”, concludes the gynecologist.
