The Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore astronauts returned to Earth after 9 months of space. Their body should take months, or even years, to recover
Astronauts Butth Wilmore AND Suni Williams They returned to Earth after they were “imprisoned” for nine months of space. Now they adapt again to gravity. Just before the return trip home, Dr. Joe Dervay, NASA’s doctor told CNN that they are “very well” in terms of health.
“There is an individual variability in the speed with which they recover, but it is incredible to see how they turn and return quickly”, Dervay said.
Changes in the body of astronauts
According to studies, without the attraction of the earth, the body undergoes profound changes. Initially, the body can lose bone density. Therefore, the muscles begin in atrophy. The dimensions of astronaut muscle fibers can reduce one third in less than two weeks.
In addition, even at DNA level, the body changes. Since our body is basically composed of liquids, spending time in space, without gravity, can leave some parts of the body with swelling, such as the face.
“The space is by far the most extreme environment that humans have already found and have simply not evolved to face extreme conditions”, Damian Bailey says, who studies human physiology at the University of South Wales in the United Kingdom.
Finally, there is a change that can be seen as a “beneficial”: without the force of gravity that compresses the spine, the astronauts are temporarily higher.
