The Netflix series deals with topics such as toxic masculinity and computer science. The inel phenomenon has worried experts on its connection with misogyny and episodes of violence. Researchers claim that the problem should be treated as mental health.
ATTENTION: This article contains the details of the plot and the descriptions of the adolescence series that could be disturbing for some readers.
The series AdolescenceFrom Netflix, it has become a global phenomenon.
The production was praised by the performances of the protagonists, among them, young unprecedented actors before the cameras, the scenes recorded in a single sequence plan and, above all, by the script.
The story revolves around Jamie Miller, a 13 -year -old British teenager who is detained after a schoolmate has been assassinated.
Among the topics covered by the series are toxic masculinity, online violence and the universe of the inconsistent.
The term, coined in the 90s, is an abbreviation of “involuntary celibate” Celibate of violation) and refers to people who describe themselves as unable to have a relationship or a sex life, although they want to have a relationship.
In the posters published in various forums on the internet, such as Reddit and 4chan, the Incel openly blame women for their “sexual failure”, from the premise that everyone would have been processed and opportunistic, worried only for money and appearance.
They usually also classify them as promiscuous and manipulative, among other generalizations.
Although there are records of this type of behavior for decades, it was with the arrival of social networks that the world of INL has gained strength and spread globally.
In some cases, these ideas have led to violent acts. In 2021, Jake Davison, who released many ideas associated with Inl on their social networks, killed five people in northern England.

In 2014, Elliot Rodger, considered a hero for some Incel communities, killed six people in Isla Vista, California.
Rodger recorded a video before the attack and said they had committed the murders because women didn’t want to have sex with him. So he himself killed himself.
Violence and misogyny
The concept of “Inlel” arrived about 30 years ago and became popular through a site created to offer support to lonely or who felt rejected.
He appeared on a blog created in 1997 by a young Canadian who identified himself as Alana.
At the time, the blog was called The involuntary celibacy project of Alana (The celibacy project of involution of Alana) and encouraged other young people to share their difficulties of difficulty in establishing emotional relationships.
Over time, the movement is advanced and the speeches have diversified.
Today it is possible to find forums full of cars -vite messages, but there are also spaces dominated by resentment speeches.
The men who participate in these forums – especially on Reddit and 4chan platforms, among others that make up the so called “male” (male universe radicalized on the internet) – show misogyny and a sense of frustration in the face of an alleged right of sex that believes they are denied by women.
Some inels defend violence against women, as well as against men who maintain happy relationships.
Florence Keen, researcher of the theme of the International Center for the study of the radicalization of the King’s College London, told the BBC that in 2021 one of the largest forums had 13,000 active members and about 200,000 publications.
“The warning I always do is that we cannot say that all the Incel subculture is violent,” says the researcher.

According to Keen, the degree of incitement to violence against varied women. Some members glorify violent acts, while others strengthen in their forums that “is not what we are”.
However, most of the concepts revolve around the same idea: the refusal of women and the envy of men who have success.
In many of these spaces, the incitement to violence is frequent.
In April 2018, ten people were invested in Toronto, Canada, by a van directed by Alek Minassian. Days before, Minassian had published several messages on his frustration in his Facebook account.
“The” Ribellione di incel “has started!”
After this attack, the BBC journalist Jonathan Griffin interviewed several young people who had participated in these forums.
Under anonymity, many have confirmed that they circulate in these spaces violent messages against women.
“In a sense, it seems that I hate women. I don’t feel like this, but sometimes I say things that they shouldn’t really, just because I read these forums,” said an interviewee, identified as Liam.
Chads and Staceys
The researchers point out that many young people resort to these forums to share their solitude, but find a group of resentful men who believe they have “lost in the genetic lottery” – which would prevent them from attracting women – and that there is nothing that can do about it.

In various forums consulted by the BBC, attractive women are called “Staceys” and the men chosen by them, “Chads”.
Both are ridiculed and insulted by the incel, who in turn accept their presumed “genetic inferiority” compared to the “chads” so called.
In the series AdolescenceThis theme is addressed through the “Rule 80/20”, which is based on the belief that 80% of women are attracted only by 20% of men, leaving others without possibilities.
The series also touches another concept in these forums: the black pill.
The metaphor refers to the red pill of the film Matrixwhich represents a awakening for an alleged hidden truth.
Many cooles encourage their followers to “take the black pill”, that is, to awaken to what they consider the confirmation that their destination is sealed by birth by the forces they cannot control.
The pill would make them understand that they are oppressed by feminism and other forces that would prevent them from leading a full life.
The escalation of violence led the authorities to monitor the content of these forums.
In the United Kingdom, after Jake Davison’s attack in 2021, the authorities expressed their intention to declare the groups of Incel as “terrorist organizations”.
Although the measure has not been adopted, the fact is that Adolescence replaced the theme in the public agenda.
The creator, screenwriter and actor of the series, British Stephen Graham, said that the idea of making production came after two cases that hit him deeply.
“The series is not based on a true story, but I remember two cases of minors who killed girls and who attracted my attention,” said Graham in an interview.
“It was then that I started doing research to understand what was really happening to this problem,” he added.
A mental health problem
The researchers followed the growth of the Incel phenomenon and their implications in an attempt to find answers.
Faced with the proposal of the British authorities to classify the Incel as “terrorists”, a study by the University of Swansea concluded that the problem should actually “be fought more as a matter of mental health than through anti -terrorist operations”.

“If we want to break this cycle, we must offer support for mental health, because if these young people do not take care of themselves, they will not worry about others,” said the psychiatrist Andrew Thomas of the University of Swansea, who participated in the research.
According to Thomas, the problem lies in the fact that these young people – whose “mental health is usually in crash”, as it defines – overrated the power of physical attraction and the purchasing power of others, while underestimating quality such as kindness, sense of humor and loyalty.
“When he mentally oversees the importance of the physical aspect for women and underestimates the weight of kindness, he begins to seek evidence that confirm this world view,” says the psychiatrist.
This is also the message strengthened by some men who have already been part of these forums, but today they say they have a new perspective.
One of these is Jack Peterson, who published a video on YouTube explaining why he decided to leave the groups in Incel.
“I realized that I could not spend all day in a forum, talking about how bad I felt and recording Podcast about it. I needed to change,” Peterson said to the BBC.
For years, he has maintained a podcast in which he propagated the ideas that are the basis of the vision of the incel, but today he believes that it is necessary to change their attitude.
“If you project love in the world, you will receive love. If it is negative for women, they will never want to have a relationship with you,” he concluded.
