Drinking water is essential for life and important for the functioning and health of the whole body, but as everything in nature, excess can be harmful. According to Dr. Roberto Galvão, from the YouTube nephrologist channel, the ideal quantity of water varies from person to person.

“The recommended average is 30 ml per kg, which is equivalent to about 2 liters per day for an adult of 70 kg. However, this need can increase in hot climates or decrease in cold climates,” he explains.

The ideal quantity, therefore, should be individualized according to the clinical condition of each patient. In addition, there are special cases in which the intake must be higher.

  • Renal calculations: Renal calculations patients may need 3-4 liters of water per day, without prejudice to the body.
  • Chronic diseases: People with kidneys, cardiac or cirrhosis should be cautious about taking water, since excess can lead to swelling, ascites, lung edema and pleural stroke.

“People with other chronic diseases such as heart failure and cirrhosis also have similar symptoms and should not overdo the consumption of water”, warns Dr. Galvão.

Healthy people can drink from 2 to 4 liters per day without complications. “It is important that each individual has a perception of himself of the functioning of his own body, being aware of well -being. If the abundance of water is causing nausea, it is a sign that there has already been exaggeration”, he warns.

The expert recommends observing the color of the urine which can be a good parameter: very light urine similar to the water indicates a high hydration, while the dark yellow urine indicates the lack of water.

Excessive consumption of water can be dangerous for high -performance athletes who practice tiring activities such as the marathon and the triathlon, in which the individual spends hours to exudate a lot, losing sodium and water through sweat.

“In this case, the replacement of pure water leads to an important reduction in the sodium of the body known as hyponatriemia, which leads to convulsions and loss of consciousness, due to the cerebral edema caused by the sudden fall of the sodium,” says the doctor.

In this case, the athlete should receive hydration with the replacement of isotonic capsules and rooms to avoid this complication.

“But for normal people in their daily activities and common sports activities such as gym, running, bikes, sports, etc., it is a rare phenomenon,” he concludes.
