April Brown’s campaign tries to sensitize the prevention and treatment of eye diseases that can lead to blindness. Although they are serious diseases, many of these conditions could be avoided with early diagnosis and adequate medical follow -up. As a result of the lack of care, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of cases of blindness are avoidable with this care.

In Brazil, over 6.5 million people live with visual impairment, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), being 500 thousand blind and about 6 million with panoramas.

The ophthalmologist FabĂ­ola Marazato, a corneal specialist at the CBV – Eye Hospital, warns of the importance of preventive care, that is, special for eye care. “Many eye diseases, in particular cataract and glaucoma, can be avoided or treated if diagnosed in advance. However, unfortunately, the lack of regular follows -mogological induces many patients to ask for help when the disease is already advanced”, explains the doctor.

Causes of blindness

Also according to the expert, the main causes of blindness in Brazil include cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration related to age (DMRI). Among children, factors such as congenital glaucoma, prematurity retinopathy and congenital eye toxoplasmosis are also among the main concerns.

“Blindness is not always definitive for all individuals, because in many cases there are surgical and therapeutic alternatives to recover or preserve the vision. That is, the important thing is that people include the need for prevention, avoiding the car -mediation and the execution of regular ophthalmic tests”, underlines Fabiola.

Essential care:

  • Avoid scratching your eyes;
  • Do not use hills without prescription;
  • Reduce the prolonged display to canvases and take regular breaks;
  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection to avoid damage to solar radiation.
