Understand how trombosis has increasingly affected young people

Difficult to pass the blood through the veins is what makes thrombosis so dangerous. Behind symptoms that often go unnoticed, the disease is able to evolve silently and reach the vital organs, requesting a rapid diagnosis and continuous care.

Although more commonly associated with elderly people or reduced mobility, the condition has been diagnosed more regularly between young adults and even teenagers. Healthy individuals, without relevant clinical history, are also among the new cases.

The warning to this change in the risk profile derives from the vascular surgeon and a member of the obstructive committee of venous syndromes and pelvic congestion of the Brazilian society of Angiology and vascular surgery – São Paulo Regional (Sbacv -Sp), Dr. Fabio Rossi, who observed this trend with concern. “The youngest population must understand that prevention starts before the disease,” he underlines.

Several elements contribute to the emergence of thrombosis and many of them are increasingly present in the daily life of young and teenagers. Doctor, especially in people who spend long periods sitting, obesity, use of contraceptives or hormones, family history of the disease, recent surgery, chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease, the consumption of cigarette And dehydration are factors directly connected to the formation of clots.

More common types of thrombosis

Venosa thromboembolia (Tev) represents the most recurring event of thrombosis and involves two main frames: deep venous thrombosis (TVP) and pulmonary embolism. “TVP affects, most of the time, the deep veins of the legs. But when the thrombus is formed closer to the groin and has a higher volume, the risk of loosening and reaching the lungs is higher. This can cause one arrhythmiaSudden cardiorespiratory and even death arrest “, explains Dr. Fabio Rossi.

The thrombosis of the superficial venous system, in turn, occurs more often after the administration of intravenous drugs, especially in the arms. Although it causes pain and inflammation, it is often considered of a smaller severity. When it affects the legs, it can indicate underlying diseases and should be studied carefully. The varicose veins in these limbs increase the risk of thrombophlebitis and thrombosis of the deep veins; Therefore, they must be studied and treated.

Symptoms of thrombosis

The identification of signals in advance can avoid serious results. Deep vein thrombosis usually causes sudden swelling on one leg, persistent pain – especially in the calf -, changes in the color of the skin (such as redness or bluish tone) and a feeling of heat in the affected area.

Pulmonary embolism occurs with lack of breath, acute chest pain, cough with blood and accelerated heartbeat. However, symptoms are not always exuberant and it is not uncommon for pulmonary embolism to be confused infarctionpneumonia and even anxiety crisis.

To confirm the suspicion, the most appropriate exam is the colorful venous doppler, a type of ultrasound that identifies the presence of thrombus in the deep and superficial veins. Most vascular offices already have this technology. In the cases that surround the lungs, the diagnosis requires computerized tomography, performed in specialized centers.

Exercise regularly and ingest the right amount of water are actions that help prevent thrombosis

Prevent thrombosis

According to Dr. Fabio Rossi, the fight against thrombosis begins with the awareness of the very need for movement. “We should all move – and this should start being stopped in adolescence. It is essential that these habits are transmitted to our children, so that they develop awareness of the importance of physical activity and balanced diet,” he says.

Keeping a routine with regular exercises, eating a lot of water, avoid caffeine drinks, quit smoking, wear comfortable clothes, not cross your legs for a long time, wearing compression socks on long journeys and observing any unusual signal are simple attitudes that make the difference. In case of suspicion, the evaluation with a vascular doctor should be immediate.

Treatments for thrombosis

In most cases, the treatment of thrombosis involves the use of oral anticoagulants and extends with the need for hospitalization. When thrombosis presents itself more aggressively, hospitalization may be necessary and, in more serious cases, the use of thrombolithic drugs or even the cateter procedures, which allow the removal or fragmentation of the clot with precision and a lower risk of risk bleeding.

“The progress of the techniques and the refinement of the equipment has made the treatment safer and more efficient. But everything depends on the agility with which the patient tries to help and the diagnosis is carried out. Time is a decisive factor,” says the expert.

In addition to the individual treatments, Dr. Fabio Rossi strengthens the importance of public policies, the regional research of data and the training of health workers. “We must know better the incidence of Tev in Brazil, identify the most frequent forms of the manifestation and enhance generalist doctors to recognize critical cases. Only then will we be able to avoid the deaths and reduce the physical, emotional and economic impacts that thrombosis imposes on families and the health system”, concludes.
