In 2024, 37.5% of Brazilians aged or over 16 years old underwent a sort of violence
Women victims of domestic violence will be entitled to dental reconstructions for free through the Unified Health System (Sus). Bill 4.440/2024which determines the implementation of the program, was sanctioned on Thursday 3 by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT).
The initiative will offer prostheses, plants, restorations and other procedures aimed at vulnerable women. The implementation of the program will be carried out in collaboration with States and Municipalities. Clinics and private dental universities will also be able to integrate the network of services to expand the provision of the service.
“Dental reconstruction and humanized treatments may seem detached, but for these women they mean a new beginning. With new services, Sus reiterates its role as a health system that welcomes, protects and transforms life,” said health minister Alexandre Padilha, in a press release.
According to the relationship “Visible and invisible: the victimization of women in Brazil 2025”37.5% of Brazilians aged 16 or over 16 years of age underwent a sort of violence in 2024 – the highest rate since 2017. This represents around 21.4 million women.
About 47.4% of women who suffered violence did not look for any help. Only 25.7% resorted to official bodies – an indicative of the difficulties that had to access the protection and health network.
In addition to dental reconstruction, the Ministry intends to expand the lilac rooms. The idea is that each health unit has a safe space, in which the victims of violence can be accepted without judgments.
Foreseen by Law no. 14.847/2024Lilac Rooms should offer quick tests for sexual transmission infections (IST), traces collection kit, pill of the following day, treatment of lesions and information materials. Specific areas are also expected to receive victims of the victims.
