Do you burn more calories in winter? See the advantages of training in the cold

The expert explains why the physical exercise in winter burns more calories and underlines the advantages of training in the cold

Who wants to do Physical exercises in the cold winterIt is not true? Track for physical activity in winter is common, but fighting can be a lot beneficialdid he see?

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism has discovered that the body increases the metabolic rate to produce heat if exposed to lower temperatures, with the need to maintain a stable body temperature (close to 36.5 ° C). In this way the body needs to work more to maintain the ideal temperature. That is, it spends more calories.

“Extra effort requires more energy, causing the muscle expense of glycogen and the oxidation of the most intense fatty fats. This helps to explain why cold exercise can contribute to some more calories expenses. This is not an isolated solution for weight loss, but a complementary factor” explains the Upx sports coordinator, Zair Candido.

In this way, the exercise in winter can even help you achieve your fastest objectives for weight loss. But the benefits don’t stop there! Here are other advantages of moving in the cold:

Strengthening of the immune system

Exposure to the cold causes the body to adapt gradually to weather conditions. “With the change of season, there are cases of problems relating to the respiratory system, such as sore throat, viruses and influence. Maintaining an active routine with exercise is an effective strategy to strengthen the immune system,” says Zair Cândido.

Fight seasonal depression

Harvard’s studies indicate that one of the factors that contribute to seasonal depression during winter is the reduction of exposure to the sun. This absence of brightness can interfere with the production of serotonin and increase melatonin – hormone responsible for regulating the circadian rhythm.

“The production of this excess hormone can influence mood, causing the lack of energy, social isolation and a greater desire to ingest caloric foods. In these cases, physical activity helps to balance hormones and, depending on the type of exercise, still allows greater contact with sunlight”, comments the coordinator of the Sport Upx.

Sleep quality

The practice of physical exercise directly influences sleep, promoting the deepest phases, in particular Rem sleep, essential for the regeneration of the body and the strengthening of immunity. The wear generated by physical activity contributes to quality sleep, with less interruptions at night and higher total sleep time. The result is a more effective and reparative rest.

Recommended activities

According to the expert, it can be better to choose home activities, especially if it’s really cold. “Give the priority to internal activities, such as bodybuilding, rotation or even walking, because, since they are performed indoors, they have a more controlled temperature. This facilitates the maintenance of normal physical activity”, Zair recommends.

However, outdoor activities also have their benefits, such as exposure to sunlight. In these cases, however, it is good to take care, as always heated before, wear clothes suitable for cold and exercise, among others.
