In an interview with News of the CBSFriends said the idea came from a conversation. “I said: ‘Ellie, wouldn’t it be fun to travel the world in 80 days at 80 years old?’Sandy said. “She replied, ‘Are you sure?’ But soon he stumbled. The pandemic has postponed the plans, but did not put an end to the enthusiasm of the duo. In 2023, 81 already put their backpack on the back and began the journey.
First stop: Antarctica
The journey began on January 11th. The first destination? No less than Antarctica, a place not frequented by travelers. To get there, they faced Drake’s feared passage, a stretch known for the frenetic waters between the South America and the Shatland Southern Islands.
“For almost two days, we were oscillating, sliding and clinging to save life”, Remember Ellie. “But when we trampled on the antarctive floor, we forget everything. Seeing the penguins, the icebergs, the glaciers … it was fantastic”.

With light luggage and open hearts, friends have traveled economically, giving priority to experiences rather than comfort. Over the 80 days, they have exceeded places like China, Argentine, Finland, Egypt, Bali AND Nepal. They set up Cames, danced with local people, met elephants, observed Aurora Boreal and flew on Monte Everest.
The journey was not only a celebration of friendship, but also a tribute. Both dedicated the journey to their deceased husbands, Assistant AND Kellywith which they performed humanitarian missions. It was during a trip to ZambiaTwo decades ago, that Sandy and Ellie met and created links that last until today.
Remarkable moments
In addition to the impressive scenarios, what touched the most friends were the meetings along the way. “We know extraordinary, kind and affectionate people. We have made friends all over the world. These are these connections that we keep more in our hearts.”He declared Ellie.
Back to TexasWhere they live, Sandy and Ellie are already planning the next trip. For them, age has brought no limits, but wisdom, gratitude and ability to appreciate every moment. “This was the perfect age to make this journey. I think, over time, we improve the beauty of things.
