Folklore and modernity: as a heritage and traditions of our ancestors, they always live in us

Have you ever struck in wood so as not to scare luck? Or were you asked not to whistle, especially in the room? Do you like to sing when it’s good at your soul? Do you know that you should communicate with respectful with the elders, and it is worth talking to foreigners? Where does he come from? Something is dictated by completely modern security rules and good tones, something is part of social norms, and indeed … “It is accepted.” Why is he so accepted and by whom? In many ways, folklore always answers these questions. Voice has asked the authors of the Podkast of the “Termen” studio – “Sonbles” – the journalist Mitya Lebedev and the folklorist -anthropologist Nadia Rychkov to say how folklore affects us to date.

It would seem that you and I have existed for a long time under the conditions of major cities, developed sciences, advanced technologies and affordable information. We no longer need to explain incomprehensible with the help of the forces of another world, ritual prohibitions or bad minds that live next to it. Nevertheless, such a model of the world (it would seem, long-more long) still lives in the United States-and is absorbed by childhood. Just through folklore.

Popular tales written in the blood

Kolobok Virtuoso avoids reprisals from various forest animals, but in the end he dies, sitting on his nose. The conclusion is simple – the flattery and the cunning is more dangerous than force. Ivan Tsarevich burned the skin of a frog and encountered problems, now to run on distant land, to release his beloved from Koshchei legs. Morality – Don’t do what they don’t ask. “Do you have a warm girl,” asks the spirit of the winter forest in Morozko, two girls. We conscientiously agree, the second will hatch the truth-Uterus. The first will live and with a reward, only the bones come back from the second to their home. Do not ask stronger, not interested in you. Do not cause cruelty, follow the rules and do not violate the prohibitions. After all, you, guy, are vulnerable to this terrible world.

These subjects and many others were not necessarily instructions for use. In the end, a fairy tale, and even more a magic fairy tale is the kind of an original adult, is the most for the time when there is not as much entertainment. But even children will discover what the traditional society of daily behavioral models and will repeat time to the turnover of speech. It is impossible to work in the field in a hot afternoon – at noon will attack (they do not yet know a sunny blow). After Ilyin, you cannot swim the day – the henchmen of the water are dragged (which is clearly worse than the “trivial cold already, you catch a cold”). Do not go to the bath after midnight – the banner will pull (or simply get it in the hammam, and everyone is already sleeping that will remove you).

Folklore and modernity: as a heritage and traditions of our ancestors, they always live in us

But not all folklore served as a safety written by blood. Prohibitions and prescriptions also concern things, less obvious to the resident of the modern city. For example, an Easter and painted egg saves a house from a fire. Beautiful through the threshold can launch a diabolical entity in the house. The sorcerer at the wedding is a compulsory guest (even if he is unpleasant, grumpy and bad). It is responsible for a line or goblin not only resentment, but also by the fact that the characteristics mentioned with Leshim will come for the promised booty … as well as practical advantages, folk traditions have formed another standard: if something works in the united world, it is better to continue to do this world, the world can collapse.

Well -forgotten

Of course, over the past centuries, humanity has grown considerably in knowledge of the world. A kind of offer to the goblin before entering the fur is no longer necessary, especially if a satellite browser, a brilliant jacket and caution. The meaning of traditions has also been blurred or completely erased. Whoever remembers that it is an exceptionally commemorated dish, because now it can be consumed at least every day (except in an eye on health and the figure).

Nevertheless, the original always finds the way and takes its place in modern times. The Zumers played in the meta-ironie and they listen to how “the crown floats along the night water” with real pleasure. The main fashion brands represent kokoshniks and modernized roasters in recycled, but always traditional models. Ethno-festivals, craft fairs, folk artists, scholarships and video games, museums and exhibitions, finally, folk festivities and festivities. All this ruthlessly exploits the semblance of a cultural code or carefully isolate the real and authentic vestiges – but the two are a real interest in those who reach the roots.

Of course, the heritage of folklore has been lost or replaced. The “typical Russian song sets” have erased the facets of costumes, the way of performance or even gender composition (which could be surprisingly different not only in different regions, but even in neighboring villages). Adult tales have become much more childish – and terrible, bloody, or even indecent details have disappeared as traumatic. And with them, part of the meaning established since the ancient initiation rites went together. The present and the original are often replaced by an alloy, stylized, commercial. Instead of a real cultural memory, we get a shugli shield on the city square, the whole of the gold ring and the cartoon heroes. Understand correctly, they are not at all bad from that, just … the others.

Spent in the present and the future

Traditions do not die for good. They can be exceeded, demystified, stolen under the influence of time – but much more often they evolve and adapt to a new period. How many times civilization has tried to replace the traditional, imposing, promoting, prohibited – consciousness in the change of old beliefs in religious dogma or in the fight against prejudices. Traditional society has remained, although not so strong, lived in these same words, in actions that have simply become so clear and explained. And so far, a 21st century resident is not, no, and I will spit three times over his shoulder, ask a cuckoo how much he stays, and he will lend people something.

Of course, the interest in the heritage of the ancestors, and after him, the love of the roots is unstable. The wave grows, everyone creates the cups of slavophiles, walks in shirts and write on the Russian soul – then change. Then another wave: they sing to Kokoshniks and sun dresses, they take “Russian seasons” abroad, seek old tales not only on the prince, but also on fools – and calm again. Today, we see this wave again (and even the saddle, such as song authors, fashion designers, filmmakers and even podcast “Smoke Tales”). Compliance with authenticity or momentary stylization is good in that they cause a person to dialogue with tradition in itself. In dialogue with yourself. On the very famous “wisdom of ancestors”, “experience of generations” and “folk identity”. So understand something new about our roots or familiarize yourself with something little known, we gain a briefly lost part of an ancient, multifaceted and diverse culture and we learn something about ourselves.
