Intestine cancer: understand the disease that brought the singer’s dead

The artist died at the age of 50 on Sunday, in New York, in the United States

The black singer Gil died on Sunday 20, due to intestine cancer. The first diagnosis took place in January 2023

According to Dr. Sergio Rouhmann, head of the oncological service of the Moinhos de Vento (RS) hospital, when a tumor recurrence occurs, tests are performed to detect the site and the extension of the recurrence. If cancer returns after the initial treatment, this means that the cancer cells had already spread, hidden and not detectable at the time of the initial diagnosis and has resisted this treatment.

Cancer cells can escape the original intestinal cancer by means of lymphatic and blood vessels and reach the lymph nodes and other tissues in the body. This gave rise to the relapse in the lymph nodes and the peritoneum, which were described by the singer.

“The injury of the ureter is generally derived from peritoneal lesions. Everything means that systemic treatment will be necessary to try to eliminate all these residual cells, which are apparently growing in different locations. Sometimes surgery can also help in this picture,” says the oncologist.

What is metastases?

As for metastases, the expert explains that it is the spread of cancer from the initial cancer. Some cancer cells have the ability to detach themselves from the original lesion and invade blood vessels. In such cases, they can be implanted in any other body body.

The doctor states that in the case of intestinal cancer, the most frequent places for metastases are abdominal lymph nodes, peritoneum, liver and lungs. However, it is also possible that other places, such as bones and central nervous system, are affected.

“Metastatic diseases can be treated, but they always represent a greater challenge than the initial treatment. First it is the treatment, the greater the chances of healing”

The oncologist states that the treatment of metastatic intestinal cancer is rather individualized. It depends on the extent of the impact, on the organs concerned, on the characteristics of the disease and the patient as a whole.

The treatment initially undergoes a detailed evaluation of the characteristics of the cancer cells. In some cases a new surgery could be the best treatment. Currently, the most decisive evaluation concerns the sensitivity of immunotherapy cancer.

“We have tests that are performed on the material of initial surgery or in a new biopsy. This will define whether the treatment will be based on immunotherapy or chemotherapy. We have other treatments called organic, which depend on molecular tests. Fortunately, the treatment alternatives have increased in recent years,” says the expert.
