The singer Junior Lima and his wife, Monica Benini, revealed, on the morning of Tuesday 22, that the couple’s daughter, Lara, 3, was diagnosed with a rare condition: nephrotic syndrome.
“We came here to talk to you about a very important topic. Our daughter, Lara, has recently been diagnosed with a nephrotic syndrome, a rare condition that affects the kidneys and is still little known. This news has caught us by surprise, but we are facing a lot of love and strength. It is already in treatment and is responding very well, being accompanied by extraordinary doctors, with positive progress!” Instagram ..
What is nephrotic syndrome?
It is a loss of urinary protein called albumina, equal to or greater than 3.5 grams per day. The presence of albumin makes the urine form a lot of foam, there is a reduction in the albumin of blood and this is one of the markers of the blood exam.
“The patient is very swollen, because this albumin is missing in the blood, since it has the ability to retain water in the blood compartment, in the circulation of the blood. So when the albumin is lost, the blood loses the viscosity and consequently cannot hold back the water. This water will be lost in the soft tissues so called.”, Explains dr. Roberto Galvão of YouTube Nephrologist Channel.
According to the expert, nephrotic syndrome is usually a very silent situation in children because it is a benign disease. Although it does not immediately have a cure, it is a very well controlled disease with dietary measures, reducing the consumption of salt and limiting excess water.
“These children often respond very well to the use of corticosteroids, prednisone is the main medicine used, but this child must have a sequel for childhood, up to adolescence and many cases up to early adulthood when a remission will begin to see”, detail.
Over the years, the dose of corticosteroids is reduced and the degree of proteinuria (protein in the urine) falls over time until there is a remission. “Of course, each case is a coincidence, there will be children who will last longer, others will have a faster resolution, but usually this is not a curable thing, but it is a benign disease, lethality is very low”, adds the doctor. About 90% of the time if you have minimal lesions.
Nefrotic syndrome in adults has different causes
In adults, the causes of the disease can be different and caused by other health problems, such as diabetes, some types of cancer, such as bone marrow and lupus – autoimmune disease that affects the entire organism.
“Since adults can have many other causes, it is very common for us to ask for renal biopsy to identify the type of injury. In the child we rarely do, since 90% of the time we know what problem is causing the minimum injury”, adds the professional.
Each disease will have a specific treatment. “These more typical adult diseases tend to chronicles. It is a more complex type of disease,” he concludes.
