The place, in the Gaucho countryside, has already hosted laziness and giant wardrobes […]
There is an harmonization that we had never imagined: wine and prehistoric animals, in a single terroir in southern Brazil.
At the Almadén Winery in Santana Do Livramento, Rio Grande do Sul, the wine brings to ancient times, when giant laziness and the closets circulate from those lands which, thousands of years later, would have grown unique vineyards.
It is here that the brand new Vinotoca Expedition, a tourist script with a visit to a paleotocation, while the underground shelters carved out of extinct animals occur. The cave discovered by this cellar in the Rio Grande do campaign on in November 2022 shows how life in prehistory in a Brazilian (future) territory was like in the current Gaucho Pampa.
7 km from the headquarters of the cellar, Paleotoca is the highlight of the Vinotoca shipping, a script of about 2h30 that starts at the Seed Museum and continues aboard the Pampean, a 4 × 4 micro bus with safari style, and vinifers of vinifers in Brazil.
The guided tour follows the deck in front of Paleotoca, where visitors can see the entrance of the cave with 1.40 meters wide and 2.60 high and follows a length of 33 meters. The structure was carefully created to preserve the place, providing for control in the space that can be occupied.
Known, popularly, like Tiger Toca, the cavity had never been studied previously, so the cellar was looking for a geological advice, which confirmed that the site was an underground refuge excavation from extinct prehistoric animals.
According to the report of the geologist Serlecio Guilherme Pinz, the area has traces of probable signs of walls by animals that lived between Gaucho Pampa and Patagonia, such as giant laziness (Lestodon or Glossotherium) and giant armadillo (pampherium), evidence that there was a routine of life of animals.

“Paleontology is a new world for us. We are well informed about the culture of wine and we always harmonize the stories and characteristics of every environment with the experiences we offer, that is, with the culture of the place”, describes Adriano Miolo, superintendent of the Miolo Wine Group, in a note sent to Trip to the agenda.
The head of the tiger is named in the vineyard where the grapes that give rise to the single core vineyard Riesling Johannisberg, one of the labels that make up the line of Miolo vineyards, which were born from the earth and spring from unique vineyards. And it was precisely because of the relationship of this wine with the environment that the technical team Almaden put a magnifying glass on the site, entering the woods to investigate the place.
And he gave what happened: a return of thousands of years over time.
From Paleotoca, the expedition goes to the guardhouse, where there is a tasting oriented of three wines developed with grapes grown in the ownership vineyards. From there, the group continues to see the Vinha Velhas Tannat, Vitis de Vitis Vinifera oldest in Brazil.
Again in wine tourism, a visit to the canteen is made and, finally, the free shop stop, the first in Brazil in a cellar, with prices of 30% lower due to tax exemption.
