This candy was one of the favorite delicacies of the Russian tsars – today it costs a penny

Palaces, balls, countless jewels… It’s hard to imagine how the sovereigns of yesteryear were surrounded by incredible luxury! Hundreds of court servants worked tirelessly just to ensure the daily life of the royal family. And make every detail of their life perfect.

This was particularly eloquent in the preparation of ceremonial lunches and dinners. In historical books of the past, the skill of court cooks was vividly described. And in particular – confectioners. They built multi-tiered curved desserts with unusual decorations no worse than today’s contestants of the wedding cake reality show!

Of course, back in those days donuts were truly considered a delicacy. Sugar and oil for batter were then still rare foreign products – and were available only to the wealthiest and most influential inhabitants of Russia.

Hot crumpets became a more common dish around the beginning of the 19th century: in classical literature there are often references to the favorite breakfast of nobles with crumpets and sour cream, and recipes for this dessert appear in cookbooks of this period.

Today, St. Petersburg is still famous for its culinary tradition. The dumplings can be enjoyed in all parts of the city – and for pennies.

The lush also work in other cities of the country – and are in demand no less than in their “small homeland”. Moreover, donuts are one of the most economical sweets that can be prepared at home. No wonder they have become one of the culinary symbols of the “frozen 90s”!
