Nicknamed Nash Potato, the child spent six months in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Pediatric Hospital of the University of Iowa Health Care. After months of health care and care, Mollie and Randall Keen celebrated the first year of the child’s life.

They describe their son as “determined, curious and the happier child than you know”. “Honestly, it seems surreal. A year ago, we were not sure of what the future would have been, and now we celebrate his first birthday,” Millie said in an interview with Guinness.

“It is exciting in many ways: pride, gratitude and even a little sadness because his journey was different. But above all, it seems a victory,” he added.

Nash Potato’s birthday party participated intimate and family friends in her hometown, Ankeny, Iowa. For the special occasion, he obtained authorization from doctors to try his cake with whipped cream.

Neonatologist Amy Stanford, who took care of the child throughout the year, explained to Guinness that the highest risk in premature births occurs in hours and days after the birth of the child.

“Taking care of a child born at 21 weeks is very different from typical premature cases. Born children so soon require highly specialized care, constant surveillance and frequent monitoring: every hour it can make the difference,” he said.

The medical team was tireless in Nash’s recovery work, but Mollie revealed that it was a “painful expectation” for her and her husband.

“It was so small that I could barely feel on my chest. It was covered with threads and monitors, and I was very nervous. But the moment when I was put in my chest, all my nervousness disappeared. I waited so much for that skin on skin for the skin – three weeks, to be exact – and I felt pure relief and love at the same time,” he said.

Nash’s potato has been in intensive care for six months. In January 2025, he was released to return home and became a local celebrity. “We never intend to be the spotlight, this is not our nature. But sharing the story of Nash was important. We wanted to give hope to other families who face medical difficulties and show what is possible even in the most uncertain circumstances,” Mollie said.
