In 1999, Jose Rubio, then mayor of the city, issued a decree that prohibited residents of dying on weekends. The unusual ban was based on a warning to a deficiency of the municipality, located in the Granada peninsula.
Lanjarón had about 4,000 inhabitants when he began to deal with overcrowding in his cemetery, a reality that prevented decent care with every dead person. While the official bodies dealt with the purchase of a new land for future burials, the population was warned of the need to “stay alive”.

The municipal decree requested “extreme health care so that they died until the city took the necessary measures to acquire an appropriate land in which our deceased rest in glory”. The Brazilian municipality has already had a similar law
In 2005, in the Region of Alto Tietê, State of Saint Paul, the Municipality of Biritiba Mirim became national news by adopting a similar measure. At the time, then the mayor Roberto Pereira da Silva decreed a municipal law that prohibited die in the city. According to him, the measure was taken to attract the attention of the authorities, since the local cemetery was crowded and the environmental laws prevented the construction of a new one.
Only in 2010, after the claims of the residents and a revision of the impediments made by the National Environment Council (Conama), Biritiba Mirim has inaugurated a new cemetery to Jardim Takebe, with a capacity of 12,000 tombs.
