Do women need more hours than men? Truth or myth?

The idea that women need more hours of sleep than men circulate in informal conversations and even titles and research. But is this difference real or just another myth on the differences between the sexes?

“Yes. On average, women tend to need more sleep than men – about 15-30 minutes more per night. This is due to factors, in particular the greatest female mental overload during the day, hormonal variations during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause”, explains the neurologist, Dr. JanaĆna Azevedo Santos Pacheco, specialist in sleep medicine.

How many hours of sleep are ideal for men and women?

According to the National Sleep Foundation and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the ideal average for adults (both sexes) is seven to nine hours of sleep per night.

“It is important to remember that it is not only the quantity, but the quality of sleep that determines the benefits: a fragmented sleep, even long, can be little restoration,” he adds.
