Can a human being survive 10 minutes without heartbeat? Is it possible to be reborn after such a situation without presenting sequences? In Paranavaí, the Municipality of Paraná, this story really took place and was interpreted by the young Enzo Henrique Barbosa de Souza, only 16 years old.

On May 7, Enzo was accompanied by friends and family in a sports arena when he suffered a sudden disease. Suddenly, his head has gone back and lost consciousness. The mobile emergency assistance service (Samu) arrived on the scene in 4 minutes, when the rescuers started the necessary procedures. About 10 minutes passed before the boy’s heart beat again.
The service is a race against the clock, as explained by Renato Max, cardiologist and sports doctor: “Time is brain when we talk about cardiac arrest. In about 4 or 5 minutes without blood circulation, the brain already starts serious injuries due to the lack of oxygen. If the arrest lasts about 10 minutes without adequate treatments, the risk of permanent neurological sequences is too high.”
Enzo spent 13 days in the intensive care unit (ICU) and had the diagnosis: hypertrophic myocardiopathy, a disease that causes the thickening of the heart muscle, making it difficult to pass the blood.
Among the possible symptoms of myocardiopathy there are palpitations, tiredness in more vigorous efforts, eager episodes and thoracic pain. People who have a family history of the disease or sudden death in young people should remain aware of cardiovascular health and seek care with a cardiologist for the initial evaluation.
According to the cardiologist, this is the main cause of death among young people under the age of 35, which requires complete investigation into the case. After the miracle, Enzo has undergone a procedure to implant a plant cardioledefibrillator (CDI), a type of pacemaker that emits shock so that the heart beats the normal rhythm after a cardiac arrest again
Quick help and preparation are essential for survival
The agility and ability of the rescuers were fundamental for Enzo’s success. The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that the possibility of survival decrease up to 10% every minute without heart massage and the resuscitation procedure.
Therefore, Max claims that, in situations like these, it is important to be prepared, even if it is not a health professional: “People’s training, even lay people, in the basic vital support, can help in these cases. Furthermore, the availability of automatic external defibrillator in public places, as in many countries, can help reduce complications like this and save many lives”.
