Bad or role of hero? Find out how sun exposure can even affect your mood

Vitamin D, one of the main practice products, helps not only the absorption of calcium, but also in the immune system and also as a marker

Global warming makes sun exposure more dangerous every year. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people with skin cancer should jump from 324,000 cases by 2020 to 510,000 by 2040. On the other hand, sunlight is important for vitamin D, the main bone growth factor and organic clock. How to solve this equation?

According to Regina Schechtman, president of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology of Rio de Janeiro (Sdbrj), the secret is in balance and “increase the exposure time every day”. In general, the doctor says that the ideal is sunbathing three times a week, between 20 and 30 minutes and outside the window from 10 to 16 due to the greater intensity of the UV rays.

“The sun is an ally of the human being as long as there is moderation,” explains Schechtman. The doctor uses UV radiation as an example which, if used under medical supervision, “can treat various diseases, including rachit, psoriasis, eczema and jaundice”.

The right dose of exposure to the sun is also the main point of the speech of the endocrinologist Francisco José de Paula, coordinator of the Department of Bone and mineral metabolism of the Brazilian society of endocrinology and metabology (Sbem). “As in almost everything for our health there is a good range. Disability and excess are bad,” he explains

What is the importance of vitamin D?

The Sbem coordinator says that vitamin D is an ancestral hormone, which is found in rudimentary beings, which specialized in controlling the metabolism of calcium, phosphorus and bones while the human being was developing.

In the body, its primordial function is the intestinal absorption of football, cites the scientific director Sbem Marise Lazaretti Castro. However, vitamin is also responsible for the immune system. “It acts to our defense against microorganisms, both against viruses and bacteria. Vitamin D has the role of inducing antimicrobial substances and also regular antibody synthesis.”

The endocrinologist also stresses that there is evidence of the effect of vitamin D as a health marker. “In general, levels of 25-ohd [vitamina D] They are low in people who have chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes mellitus, hypertension and cancer) “, exemplifies.

For the production of vitamin D, it is recommended to exposure in long bone areas such as spine, legs and arms.

Does the sun help in other functions?

The sun’s rays play a key role in regulating the circadian rhythm, which regulates the various wake and sleep processes, as well as body temperature and the production of hormones. And how does this process work? The retina captures the light (or its absence) and sends this stimulus to the brain, informing the range of the day.

“This rhythm is an important regulator of the hypothalamic/pituitary/adrenal axis which is responsible for the production of an important hormone, cortisol. Cortisol acts on various systems, such as energy metabolism, blood pressure, sodium control and sodium and mineral metabolism”, explains Francisco José de Paula.

In addition, it is also possible that the sun can be directly connected to the sense of well -being, put in size the scientific director of Sbem. “It is possible that the sun has other benefits that we do not recognize and we have no way of measuring, that it has no substance that it is isolated and that refers to well -being, with the disposition.”

“While we know that during the winter, for example, people have more depression and in summer mood improves, but it is not known exactly what substance promotes it.”
