But what is the inguinal hernia?
The condition occurs when a soft tissue, usually of the intestine, swells and creates a protrusion between the muscles of the abdomen, which causes a swelling in the groin region. The diagnosis is carried out through clinical and image tests such as ultrasound.
The problem is not always a defined cause, but situations such as frequent constipation, the lifting of heavy objects or obesity contribute to manifesting themselves. In more serious cases, circulation and block of nausea may occur.
According to Marcelo Avebach, coloprocologist and surgeon of the digestive tract of the Syrian-Tebanese hospital, the condition can cause pain that often prevents the person from carrying out their usual activities.
“The problem of inguinal hernias is not only the discomfort it can lead to, but also the possibility of detention, that is, without the possibility of putting the structures in normal positioning,” says Avebach.
When is surgery required?
The treatment may not be necessary if the hernia is small and does not cause immediate pain or risks. If it is growing or causing symptoms, however, surgery can be an option.
For Miller Barreto, general surgeon and digestive surgeon at the Das ClĂnicas hospital, the operation is the only definitive treatment of hernias as they can increase in size over time.
It also adds that the operation is considered simple and low risk. “It can be done open, laparoscopic or robotic. The main risks involve infection, bleeding and chronic pain in the worked region, but all with very low rates,” he explains.
The recovery after the intervention of inguinal hernia depends on each patient. Most of the time, the person is discharged one day or two after the procedure.
