Intestinal cancer: exercise and diet increase survival

In addition to training, an anti -inflammatory diet is essential for those who receive the diagnosis of intestine cancer.

According to a recent study, patients with colon carcinoma -Retto who practice physical activities live more and better

The third most frequent cause of neoplasms in the country, colon -terre cancer or intestinal cancer has different causes. Among these causes there are diet, environment, genetics and intestinal microbioma, that is, the set of microorganisms present in the gastrointestinal tract. The good news is that, according to new medical studies, exercise and anti -inflammatory diet can guarantee greater survival for patients.

“Two recent studies are important tests that the addition of healthy routine practices during and after the treatment of cancer can help reduce the risk of recurrence and improve the quality of life”, explains Ramon Andrade de Mello, oncologist at the Paulista Medical Center High Clinic Brazil and vice -president of the Brazilian Cancerology Society.

The National Cancer Institute (Inca) estimates that, between 2023 and the end of 2025, there will be about 45,000 new cases of colon cancer -Retto per year in Brazil. The incidence of this tumor is higher in the South -East and South regions. The complications of colon cancer -they caused the death of the black singer Gil in July.

Know the study

The first study appeared in June of this year in New England Journal of Medicine And he joined the American Society of Clinical Oncology, or American Society of Clinical Oncology). This study accompanied 889 patients between 2009 and 2024, all with colon cancer and chemotherapy completed. “Half has received an information booklet that encouraged them to adopt a healthy lifestyle, with good nutrition and exercise. The other half has also received follow -ups from a physical activity consultant for three years,” says the doctor.

The data show that physical activity should be part of the processing. “The exercise program prevented 1 on 16 patients who developed a recurring or new cancer. Furthermore, the study showed a free rate for the illness of 80% of the five years for the group with a consultant for the exercise compared to 74% for the group that received only the booklet,” says the expert. The beginning of physical activity will depend on the patient’s condition, but it is possible to program during the treatment of chemotherapy or immediately after the end of this treatment, according to Ramon Mello.

Antioxidant compounds

Another current study, published in early June 2025 in Journal of Clinical Oncology And also presented at the ASCO conference, it has shown that the addition of anti-inflammatory components to the diet also increases the survival of patients with colorectal carcinoma.

“Coffee, tea and vegetables, such as green leaves, were some of the foods inserted in the diet. They contain polyphenols, which are antioxidant compounds with the benefits of the modulation of the inflammation for health,” says the doctor. The group that consumed these foods and practiced higher levels of physical activity had a lower risk of death than patients who consumed diets with a less natural and more inflammatory standard. A more inflammatory diet contains red meat, transformed meat, refined cereals and sugary drinks.

The importance of vegetables

In fact, vegetables consumption is a medical indication to prevent this type of cancer. “We know that the fibers play a protective role for the intestine, especially in the prevention of colon and rectum cancer,” says Mello. Therefore, the recommendation is to consume between 25 and 35 grams of fiber every day. For this, it is necessary to adopt a rich diet in cereals, tubers, roots, fruit, vegetables and vegetables.

The doctor recalls that the diagnoses of colon -receipt carcinoma are increasing among the youngest adults, largely due to the lifestyle. “The intestine cancer is truly associated with the environment, diet, lifestyle, chemicals present in food and goes beyond genetics. So studies like these are extremely important to reflect on how our diet and lifestyle influence the risk of developing this type of cancer”, concludes the expert.
