On August 24, the Catholic Church celebrates the life and martyrdom of São Bartolomeualso known as Natanael in the Gospels. One of the twelve apostles of Jesus ChristIt is remembered by the sincere faith and dedication to announce the Gospel, even in the face of persecution.
The encounter with Jesus
Bartolomeu’s call appears surprisingly in the Gospel of John. PhilipAfter meeting Jesus, racing to tell the news to his friend Natanael: “We find the one from which Moses wrote in the law and in the prophets: Jesus of Nazareth, son of Joseph.” Surprised, Natanael asks: “Can you get something good to come from Nazareth?” To which Philip replies: “Come and see”.
While approaching, Jesus reveals that he knows Natanael’s heart: “This is a real Israelite, in which there is no deception”. Admired, asks: “Where do you know from me?”. Jesus replies: “Before you Philip calls him, I found it under the fig”. Convinced, Natanael exclaims: “Rabbi, you are the son of God; you are the king of Israel!” (John 1, 45-49).
Who was Bartolomeu?
In the synoptic gospels (Matteo, Cornices AND Lucas), appears as Bartolomeu, while in John, his name is Natanael. For scholars, it is the same person, whose name means “gift of God”.
Natural of Canenearby city NazaréBartolomeu describes as a sincere man, well informed of the law and used to meditate on writing. His faith, despite initial skepticism, became complete in recognizing Jesus like the Messiah.
Missionary and martyr apostle
After the resurrection of Christ, Bartolomeu was among the disciples who remained united in prayer. The Christian tradition underlines that it has evangelized in various regions of the East, through Mesopotamia, India AND Armenia.
In Armenia, he even converted the king of Polimio and his wife, who generated the revolt of the local priests. By order of Astiages, the king of the king, Bartolomeu was condemned to the martyrdom in Albanópolis, around 68.
The relics of the saint arrived at Pomegranate centuries later, and today they rest in the basilica of San Bartolomeu, in Tiberin island. His memory is celebrated on August 24, remembering all Christians the importance of sincere faith, courage in testimony and trust in Christ.
