Even with the daily application, some areas of the body are easily forgotten when they protect themselves from the sun
Even those who apply sun protection every day could leave some important unprotected regions. The dermatologist dott. Ana Maria Pellegrini, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), explains what these areas are and the importance of taking care of them:
Eyelid: attention to the eyes
The eyelids and region around the eyes are among the most neglected, despite the increase in cases of skin cancer in these areas. A survey by the 2017 University of Liverpool revealed that by applying sun protection on the face, about 10% of the face – including the eyelids and the area between the internal corner of the eye and the nose – is often forgotten.
“Adequate sun protection should be performed effectively with the coverage of the entire face, in addition to the use of hats and in particular sunglasses, since the eye area has extremely thin and susceptible to damage, including cancer”, explains the dermatologist.
Some filters can cause irritation in the eye region, so the recommendation is to prioritize products tested in an ophthalmologically. “But the most important data to be obtained from this research are the importance of accessories in sun protection, such as sunglasses, which not only safeguard the eyes and corneas; they are important to protect, even the skin of the inclination of the eyelids of cancer”, adds Ana.
Nose: do not save on the application
The tip and the side of the nose also deserve special attention. “There is a tendency to neglect the entire outline of the nose or pass too quickly in the region. This is an area that we cannot save or forget to pass through the nostrils outline. Skin cancer may also appear in this region,” warns the doctor.
Lips: thin and vulnerable skin
The lips have a very thin skin and are constantly exposed to the sun. “When leather cancer occurs on the lips, in about 90% of cases, it occurs in the lower lip and the most common type of skin carcinoma on the lips is spinocellular carcinoma,” explains Ana.
Therefore, it is advisable to apply specific lip protection with SPF 30 or more daily, reappinging every two hours or after eating or drinking.
Ears: a forgotten zone
“This is a region that many forget, but above all for men or women with short hair, it is very shown. And when passing sun protection, the patient should not forget to extend the application of the product on the back of the ear,” says the dermatologist.
Neck and neck: does not underestimate the sensitivity
The skin of the neck and womb is thin and age faster. “Many patients believe that the neck is an area of” natural shadow “, but this is not true. The region is also affected by radiation and several studies have already underlined that sand and sea water and swimming pool are able to reflect sunlight”, explains Ana.
Elbows: more attention to folding
The elbow region receives little attention, but is sensitive and subject to damage. “This is because the elbows are areas with few sebaceous glands, naturally dried and more susceptible to environmental damage. As are areas of flexion and friction, they are also more likely to develop points”, warns the dermatologist.
Gali Nazzi: protection also under clothes
Solar protection should also be applied to buttocks, since clothing does not always guarantee total protection. “The right way to apply sun protection is 30 minutes before exposure to the sun, without clothes, spreading evenly well and avoiding the accumulation in some areas. It is necessary to apply throughout the body,” underlines the doctor.
Remains quantity of sun cream
To ensure the effectiveness, Dr. Ana Maria Pellegrini recalls the recommendations of the Brazilian company of dermatology on the amount of protector by region:
- A teaspoon on the face, neck and head;
- A teaspoon in front of the trunk and one for the back; a teaspoon of teaspoon for each arm;
- A teaspoon in front of each leg and one for the rear.
