The procedure was performed last July, but emerged after the patient’s medical discharge, identified as Nick Mondek. Resident in the California region of Los Angeles, the anesthesiologist diagnosed cancer in 2022.
“At the time, Mondek received the first stem cell transplant, donated by his brother, and the disease went to remission. However, the man was surprised by the return of LMA last April. The doctors therefore sought new donors.
Not able to find compatible donors, Mondek recalled that a friend had recovered after receiving the stem cell transplantation given by the 18 -year -old son. He tried to know, therefore, the possibility that his son, at the time at 9, could be the donor.
With the authorization of the medical team and the preparation of Mondek’s son, the process between the removal of the child’s stem cells and the transplant required about a week. Successful, the anesthesiologist was discharged on August 16, after two weeks under observation.
According to experts, there is a period of one year for the patient’s immune system to adapt to the new stem cells, but the prognosis is optimistic: “Mondak is hard, he will not accept anything less than healing”, said John Chute, director of the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, where the procedure was performed.
