Having the mouth: the new trend on social networks that increases health notices

The practice of gluing the mouth with the sleep tape promises to reduce the snoring and improve sleep, but doctors explain why it can be dangerous

A new habit has attracted attention to social networks: glue the mouth with the ribbon before going to bed, a practice known as “Topping of the mouth”. The idea, defended by influencers and even celebrities, promises to reduce the snoring, improve the quality of sleep, fight halitosis and even “define” the jaw. But, according to doctors, this fashion can bring more risks than benefit.

What experts say

According to experts, the studies behind the oral ribbon are small and even smaller benefits. The practice altered respiratory physiology during sleep, cause jaw tension and aggravate sleep disorders. Although breathing through the nose is ideal, forcing this breath artificially is not the safest solution.

The nose acts as a natural filter, holding dust and allergens before reaching the lungs. Breathe through the mouth, on the other hand, can cause dry mouth, halitosis and the increase in snoring. But in healthy adults, this isolated habit rarely represents a serious risk.

What really helps against snoring

Instead of resorting to tape, doctors suggest simple and proven measures to improve breathing during sleep, such as:

  • Avoid sleeping on the back (putting a pillow or even sewing a tennis ball in pajamas can help keep the side position);
  • Reduce alcohol consumption before bed;
  • Look for medical assistance if there is suspected apnea or russare frequent;
  • Evaluate the use of devices indicated by experts, as oral devices, in specific cases.

Not everything that viralizes is healthy

The hashtag #Mouthtaping already adds millions of views in TiktokBut this does not mean that it is a safe practice. Often these trends gain strength with commercial interests without scientific support. The guide of the experts is clear: instead of betting on dangerous tricks, the ideal is to study the real cause of difficulties of snoring and sleeping. Consulting a sleeping doctor or an otorinolaryngology is the most effective and safe way to reach more peaceful nights.
