Too old? Madonna opens up on ageism

Celebrating the feat of being the only singer in history to place 50 songs at the top of a Billboard list, Madonna gave an interview to the American program “The Night Show”, last Wednesday (10). In addition to the celebration, the artist took the moment to let off steam on ageism – prejudice against age.

At 63, she highlighted some of the most heard phrases by women reaching the 50+ stage, strengthen discrimination with this age group. “Ridiculous” and “Can’t get old” are some of the most heartfelt age-reinforcing comments.

According to active longevity specialist Márcia Sena, this happens because society has a conception that from the age of 50, women, mainly, should have a peaceful life, without sexual relations and away from vanity. Therefore, any behavior outside of this standard is judged, particularly by the “Internet court”, which is common for celebrities like Madonna.

The maximum age does not exist, or at least it should not exist

“What many don’t understand is this the change in quality of life is generating longevity and autonomy. In other words, both men and women age well and look younger, healthier and more vital every day, ”says Márcia.

Therefore, powerful women over 50, such as Madonna, should not be seen as an isolated case. but as a trend. After all, the premise is precisely this: to live well to age well. And aging doesn’t mean the end of anything, you know? Age is not, and has never been, a document.

But, unfortunately, this understanding is not yet complete. The expert remembers, for example, an episode of ageism reported by actress Ingrid Guimarães. On social media she wrote: “I noticed a certain silence when I say I’m approaching 50. When the person wants to be nice, he says again, ‘Look, you look great, okay ?! Almost as if to say,’ Calm down, you don’t look old ‘.

negative effect

According to the specialist, practicing ageism harms (and a lot!) To those who are the target of this prejudice. Trauma and even depression can be the consequences of this discrimination. Therefore, it is urgent to raise awareness in society about this problem.

“We must know how to age with quality, because the way in which we will reach old age is a decision that depends only on us. This phase of life, if lived well, gives great pleasure. All people over 50 are able to explore the most diverse areas of life. After all, it’s never too late to start. ”
