Acupuncture is among the ways to treat chemical dependence

The doctor explains the benefits of agpuncture for the treatment of chemical dependence

According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), chemical dependence (Licit or illegal drugs) is a disease. Therefore, the improper use of substances such as alcohol, cigarettes, cracks and cocaine is an international public health problem. The Ministry of Health stresses that this is a problem that worries nations all over the world, as it affects cultural, social, economic and political values. In this context, finding ways to treat dependence is fundamental and acupuncture can be an ally.

Acupuncture is part of millennial Chinese medicine and today composes supplementary medicine, which includes western techniques. In 1995, the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) recognized it as a medical specialty.

Acupuncture

Dr. Alexandre Massa, acupunctive doctor and teacher director of the Medical College of SP (CMAESP) acupuncture, explains that the goal is to mark specific points of the body, with the intention of promoting balance and well -being. The stimuli can be made with very thin needles, laser and local heat, such as mox or suction cup therapy. If stimulated, these points release natural endogenous, for example endorphin, serotonin and dopamine.

Within supplementary medicine, acupuncture is widely used as a way to reduce the use of medicines, which usually cause various side effects. The technique, however, practically does not cause sequel. “When it occurs, a small bruise can take place in the place, but it is a side effect that does not damage or limit the patient after applying acupuncture,” says dr. Alexandre.

Treatment of chemical dependence

The doctor underlines that acupuncture can help in drug addiction, especially in the treatment of smoke. “But it is important to emphasize that there is no miraculous point that applies that the patient automatically stops smoking. It is necessary to change habits,” he says.

According to him, the technique helps to relieve the symptoms of abstinence, in particular anxiety, and also helps to relax. In addition, among the substances issued by the acupuncture, endorphin is the one that can help the most, as it acts directly in the decrease in the will of dependence.

The question of alcoholism follows the same mechanism, explains Alexandre. “Acupuncture helps to release the body’s natural chemicals to reduce this desire for dependence, and in particular to reduce the symptoms of abstinence, both in cigarettes and in the drink. Obviously, if the patient is calm, more relaxed, these compulsions can also decrease,” he says.

In addition, the acupunctor underlines that to treat chemical dependence, in some cases, it is indicated to make daily applications, until the patient leaves this greater crisis of anxiety and compulsion and this feeling of abstinence. Since the patient has greater control of their conditions, it is possible to reduce the treatment to two or three times a week. Dr. Alexandre strengthens that acupuncture is not miraculous, so it is also necessary to change certain habits.

Does acupuncture have the contraindication?

There is no absolute contraindication regarding acupuncture, underlines the doctor. “Some people are very afraid, so it ends up interrupting the patient to look for this type of treatment. But usually this fear decreases a lot or disappears, when patients experience the first acupuncture session,” says Alexandre.

According to the professional, this is due to the fact that the needles are extremely thin and have almost double the thickness of a hair – between 0.25 or 0.20 mm in diameter. “So, in general the patient feels nothing in the application of needles or a light pain that is very bearable,” he comments.

It also adds that patients taking anticoagulants should warn the doctor who will apply acupuncture. This is because, when you take the needles, there are the possibility of being bruised. “But this does not contraindic the application of needles,” he says.
