SPFW: Apartment 03 pays homage to Brazil’s first black clown

Black creators, consumers, role models and characters are more recurring in this 60th edition of SPFW. If before it was a taboo, today black culture is standardized and included. Luckily. One of the examples was the Minas Gerais brand show Apartment 03by designer Luiz Cláudio, who paid homage to Benjamim de Oliveira, Brazil’s first black clown.

The “O Menino do Beijo” collection brought fragments of the research that the stylist carried out, also through the photos provided by the artist’s family, which marked the popular theater and the Brazilian circus at the end of the 19th century, the era of the signing of the Golden Law.

Luiz Cláudio wanted to reinterpret how Benjamin would dress today, given that at that time he wore a top hat and tailcoat. These elements, therefore, were not missing on the catwalk, with great refinement and sophistication.

Top hat and cane have been the underlying theme of numerous looks, with coats, tailcoats and tailored pieces ever present in the designer’s history. But everything is accompanied by a lot of shine, be it black, gold or silver. Prints of diamonds and balls, typical of the arena, made the looks even more sophisticated.

Pieces with reforested wood appear composed of lighter fabrics. The looks also featured feathers, checks, fringes, pleats, wider, balloon-like shapes, many perfect for parties and celebrations.

The representativeness and importance of the character were further emphasized with almost all the black cast, as well as with black influencers and artists in the audience, such as Cris Vianna and Isabel Fillardis.

“Telling is making stories exist. This collection is a gesture of affection and resistance, a look at the past that helps me understand the present. It’s about transforming memory into movement, dressing history and allowing it to continue to live”, Luiz Claudio. And that.

More than a biographical tribute, the collection offers an exercise in reimagining: how would Benjamin dress today? The answer is revealed in a tailor’s shop with a poetic and theatrical aura, where technical rigor meets the free spirit of the arena. Fabrics in gold and black, liquid silver and pleated silk patchwork in shades of chocolate, green and powder pink combine with dresses with circus geometries and artisanal textures. The top hat, a symbolic element, appears reinterpreted as a metaphor for the elegance and resistance of this historical figure.
